Surname NEVILLE

I have a g grandmother Kate Maud Neville, born 1864 in Thaxted, father Frank? Neville, a miller.

Kate married first a man with the surname Vaughan and had two children, Kate Neville Vaughan and Alfred H Vaughan in the 1880s.

She then married Arthur Henry Coe and had two further children,
William A Coe born 1892, New Kent Road, Surrey
Dorothy May Coe born 1895, Marylebone, London.

I would very much like to trace this branch back further, but Kate's birth does not appear to be registered.

Anyone tracing this family, or having bright ideas on how to get a connection without a birth certificate (I have the second marriage certificate), please help.

Hi,

Have you tried to find either Kate Maud or Frank Neville in the 1871 census (hopefully they'd still be in the Thaxted area)?

From looking at the IGI batch numbers on Hugh Wallis' site (http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~hughwallis/IGIBatchNumbers/CountyEssex.htm#T) it would appear that the baptisms for Thaxted do not go up to the date you are looking at.  You could try the Essex Records Office (http://www.essexcc.gov.uk/vip8/ecc/ECCWebsite/display/guides/ero_guide_guide_119186_ArchivesAndMuseums/index.jsp) in the hope of finding a baptism for Kate.

Yes, I did try the 1871 census, and that part of the 1861 census which is free online, but it doesn't look as though the family went in for filling in forms very much!

I will follow up the baptism route, but I'm not sure that this side of the family were too impressed by baptism, either.
