Any information on the early life or parentage or area where he lived for this relative would be greatly appreciated.
I have his marriage and place of death, thanks.

Seatter is a fairly common name on Westray (which is one of the northern isles of Orkney). There are also Seatters in the current phone book (its the Aberdeen, Orkney and Shetland volume) in other places of Orkney (including Sanday, South Ronaldsay, Longhope, etc) Can you give some more information about your William? Dates of birth and death might help (or approximate dates) and names of parents etc. The Orkney Library in Kirkwall has a lot of genealogical information if you can narrow things down a bit. ALso, many areas of Orkney have local Heritage Centres which are kind of like local history archives, but you'd need to know which area or island you wanted first.

William Traill Seatter, b 1827, parents maybe William S and Lydia Ann Fleet. William T Seatter married 1858, died 1890.
Farmed 257 acres at Saviskail.
It was more a general thing aimed at people on Orkney or from Orkney.
Thanks

Hi all,
Thanks Trish, that book looks a go, have looked at the few Seatters in NZ and wondered,
Lindyloo, have vast Seatter, Flett paper record somewhere from 15 years ago when first working on this branch, will check soon.
The Shearers in this family also moved to Edinburgh.

Hi MK2
Saiskaill could possibly be the name of a house/farm. Does not appear to be an area.
orkneyjar.com/links
skaill; meaning house or hall, found today as- skaill, eg Langskaill
Just a thought
Trish ( another good site the orkneyjar one)

The previous poster is right in that this is undoubtably the name of a farm or house. Even today, addresses in Orkney are house names (except for some in the main town of Kirkwall, or houses within newer housing estates). This does make life fun when trying to input them into standard government forms! So, it should be possible then to actually find your Saviskaill either on current or old maps of Orkney. I say 'should', because unfortunately there are often many houses of the same name in different areas of Orkney. If you can identify which area, or which island your ancestors came from then that will help. This link will get you to one possibility, but it may not be the only one. (it is the only one I can find at the moment though). It is on the north isle of Rousay, which is just a short ferry trip from mainland Orkney. http://tinyurl.com/saviskaill If you zoom in on the map at the point of Saviskaill bay you will get the house/farm identified.
For a bit more of a scenic view try this site: http://www.aroundrousay.co.uk/saviskaill_bay.shtml You will see on one of the photos here that Saviskaill farm is identified in the picture. This again 'may' be your farm, but may not, and even if it is the right location, the buildings will probably be a lot newer. There will almost certainly be remnants of old buildings on the site though, around the current buildings.
(BTW I live in Orkney, although I am a relatively recent immigrant to the islands and have no family heritage here)
