Does anyone know where my Catholic great grandfather, who died in Lewes in 1908, is likely to have been buried please? I don't think the Catholic church in the town has a burial ground of its own. I am about to visit Lewes and would love to find his grave
try the main one off Rotten Row, half way down on the right (at the west end of the High Street, below St Anne's Church and the modern County Hall)
I also have a booklet (14 pages only) called Sussex Catholic Surnames 1558 to 1829. It is bit basic but you could get a copy form a libruary, ISBN 0 907084 03 6. It is No6 of the Sussex Genealogical Centre Occasional Papers.

Thanks very much Rod. I had intended to look in the cemetery on Rotten Row as I thought it would be the most likely place, assuming there wasn't a specific Catholic burial ground. I guess there wouldn't have been one because I think this was still the time when there was a lot of discrimination against Catholics. I will try and see a copy of the booklet you mention when I'm in Lewes Library. Although my great grandfather was an Irishman who only moved to Lewes c1900, some of my other Sussex surnames may be in there. Thanks again for your help. Ann
