Hi
I am researching my Osmond line from Sussex & Kent
My earliest member Edward Osmond married Elizabeth Singleton
South malling on 18 9 1786
I however cannot find a bpt for Edward, and later cannot find and death or burial record of either, Edward or Elizabeth
They had three children (that I have found)
Edward Osmond born South Malling? between 1786 - 1795?
Frederick Osmond b 13 4 1798 & bpt 5 11 1798
Lucy Osmond b 8 10 1803 bpt 5 11 1803
My Osmond's seem to have moved around working as Carpenters
Lewes, South Malling, Uckfield, Frant, Tunbridge Wells, & Hastings
Any connections, help or advice would be great

Started to have a look through my Archives for Osbornes
South Malling Burials - non after 1712
St John Sub Castro Bapt - non after 1724
1851 Census for Lewes:
George Osborne, 23 - Prisoner of Uckfield - North Street County Prison
John Osborne, 20, servant (groom) born Little Horsted
Sophia Osborne, general servant, born Froxfileld in Hampshire
They seem to be few and far between - can you give me more precise dates when and where you have located them

Hi Chris,
Firstly thanks for the welcome, and again for assisting me in my quest.
As I said I am researching the name Osmond. The earliest of which is the marriage of Edward Osmond to Elizabeth Singleton
They were married in South Malling on 18 9 1786
As yet I have found no info on Edward other than this marriage and no info on Elizabeth other than she may have been a witness at her son's wedding again in South Malling on 29 5 1820, so her death assuming it was her was after this date.
They as far as I have found had three children
Edward Osmond born South Malling? between 1786 - 1795?
I am assuming Edwards birth year based on the year of his parent’s marriage 1786 and the 1851 Census for Frant; he was given as age 57
This Edward married a Jane Avis on 29 5 1820 at South Malling and he died 27 4 1859 in Frant
Frederick Osmond b 13 4 1798 & bpt 5 11 1798 at St Thomas in the Cliff, Lewes he died 1855 in Brighton
Lucy Osmond b 8 10 1803 bpt 5 11 1803 St Thomas in the Cliff, Lewes (Info from IGI)
I think you may have been looking at Osborne as a name variant, but the spelling of Osmond seems to have been correct in the registers I have come across.
Although later I have seen it spelled with an E OsmondE and Osborne in an Uckfield register.
Does this info make sense? Let me know if not

Hi there Dave
As I said before the name Osborn appears very rarely in the register transcripts I have of Burial / Baptism in Lewes and in particulat South Malling.
The first rule of genealogy is that you have to look for all variations of a name - remember that the majority of our ancestors could not read or write, so when standing in front of the registrar they said their name was Osborn and he wrote down Osbun - because that is what he heard - they were not in a position to tell him he had spelt it wrong.
I was going over to the records office at Lewes this week, but pulled a muscle in my back carrying my little one up to bed the other night - so its on hold for a while. In the meantime I have made a note of your query and will look in South Malling Registers next time I go
