This family has been an even bigger headache than the Quinn family! We know this much:
James Overn, born 1799 in Cloughenramer, County Down, Ireland. Married Ann Granger, born 1800, same place. (Recent clues say this may have been his 2nd wife.)
James 1st son was John Overn, born in December and christened in December 1822 in Newry, County Down. There were several more children, most likely born in Down. (I have names and some information on all of them if needed.)
Then my great grandmother, Catherine Ann Overn, was born August 23, 1833 in Enniskillen, County Fermanagh.
In 1835, the family came to America. We have them listed as sailing from Nova Scotia on the Schooner Congress, docking in Boston, but we don't have any information regarding the ship they came from Ireland on. They stayed in Boston for many years, at least until 1857. James Overn owned a grocery store in Charlestown, Mass.
Catherine Ann married James Quinn on October 1851 at St. Mary's Church in Charlestown.
I have been told they were Norwegian or Finnish or Danish. I have been told that they changed their name from McGovern, Magauran, Mc Overn, or some other name. I have been told the family probably came originally from Scotland. If any of this is true, then it all happened before 1799, and there has been nothing found to prove any of it.
I do know there are a VERY few families left in Ireland who carry the surname Overn, and family who live in Ireland (Quinn side) say it is most definitely an Irish name. I have more family information if anyone thinks they might connect.
Here's hoping!!
