Hi, this is my 1st post on rootschat. I'm looking for more information on William Maylin (1806 to 1908), yes he was 102! In 1977 Hitchin council named a road after him, Maylin Close. I'm looking for records relating to his mariage/s and children. Can anyone help please? Thanks, Alan

Welcome!
A good place to start is the LDS website, www.familysearch.org, which will give you free access to the 1881 census (I've looked - he's staying with a daughter in Friern Barnet)
You may also find his christening /parents in the IGI section of that site, plus his children if they were baptised
In 1871 he was living at St Andrews Rd Hitchin:
William Maylin head marr 63 bricklayers labourer born Walsworth
Ann Maylin wife 60 publican born Hitchin
No children living with them unfortunately, just 3 nephews all born at Hitchin
Robert Maylin 9; Alfred Maylin 5 and John Farr 18.
I can't see him on a quick look at 1861 when he might have some children still with him, but I'll spread the search options, and also have a look in 1851 which will take longer, but which should be more useful.
I'll also check later censuses to see if I can find him.

Do you have more than was in your original post? I haven't been able to find him in Hitchin in 1851 going through the original census, or anywhere in 1861.

Living in Tottenham 1861, no trace of W and E in 1871 but children split between both sets of grandparents. Had parents died between 1866 and 1871?

It’s frustrating in that in 1861 James, Eliza, Louisa, and Arthur and their respective families were all living in St Andrews St/Place Hitchin, which is where William and Ann were in 1871. But there’s absolutely no trace of William and the remainder of the family in 1861.
And without census evidence that the above children were with William b 1806 and Ann b 1810 there’s no firm proof that they are all their children (but there weren’t any other Maylins in Hitchin at that time, so I think it’s a fairly safe bet!)
There’s a christening on the IGI of William Malin in Hitchin on 29 Jan 1808, parents John and Catherine. The National Burial Index on CDrom shows a John Malin being buried at Hitchin on 26 Aug 1809 aged 25, and Catherine Maylen buried at Hitchin on 18 Oct 1844 aged 70. It would be interesting to look for her, and William in 1841 – but I’m afraid I can’t help you there. Suggest you post a specific request on the Herts look up board asking for William and Ann and family plus Catherine in Hitchin in 1841.
I’ll have another go at the 1851 to see if I have any more luck second time through – at least this time I know how many there should be in the family!
Ideally the above should be checked by reference to Hitchin parish registers which are available on microfilm via your nearest LDS Family History Centre, and by obtaining crucial certificates from the GRO, which can be done online.

OK, panic over. Found him in 1851. Rotten writing, eyes even worse!

So James had flown the nest, Eliza was already married, and Ann is enumerated as Hannah. so it does confirm what's in the IGI.
Of course what you don't know is Ann's maiden name and when they married (presumably around 1827/8), and unfortunately there's nothing that I can see on the IGI, although marriage records from Hitchin have been transcribed for this period. It would be worth checking the microfilm, or getting the record office, HALS, to check (they would charge).

Wow!!
I've spent a while looking for Williams' family without success. I really appreciate the effort. Thank You. I have some info about him from a book about street names. I know that he is buried in a cemetary in Hitchin (I believe there are two?). I work away from home during the week. I've just bought Family tree Maker so that I can store the info on the PC instead of on paper. I'll be able to update the tree at the weekend. Just out of interest, do you have the records you used on CD or are they available online. I guess it's just a question of knowing where to look.
