Help! birth/marriage.
« on: Wednesday 23 February 05 02:53 GMT (UK) »

I am a little stuck on my McGurks.. Was wondering if someone could please help me find a birth and or marriage for my John Francis McGurk.

Here is what I know..

On the birth certificate of my Francis McGurk born 15th July 1878, has parents John McGurk and Margaret McGurk late Hartley formerly Bulmer. I presume that they did marry! They were living 15 Nelson Street Gateshead county of Durham. (The Engineers Arms, family ran)

Now, John Francis McGurk is on all census born c1850 in Newcastle Upon Tyne, that has been consistant but his name has'nt, he has swapped from John Francis to Francis John McGurk, on later census. His parents were a Francis McGurk born Belfast and Alice ? born Dundulk Louth.

Either date would be great so I can order a certificate. They were Catholics, unsure if strick catholics though!

Thanks Ele...

Thanks Joe, thats the one I already have. Francis McGurk born 15th July 1878 Gateshead Durham. It's his father John Francis or Francis John McGurk c1850 Newcastle Upon Tyne that I am stuck on and his marriage to a Margaret Elizabeth Bulmer formerly Hartley.

Margaret Elizabeth was born in Ripon York, but her daughter, Beatrice B H Hartley (used surname McGurk on census) is down as being born Newcastle Upon Tyne in 1874.

In 1871, Margaret was a Bulmer and living at 148 North Street Ripon, Eccles Districk Holy Trinity with Bulmer family and in 1871, John Francis McGurk was living 116 Queen Street Newcastle with McGurk family.

My guess is that they married sometime between 1874 and 1878 because Beatrice is a Hartley..

Thanks for looking, Ele.

Ele,

I had my nose in St Andrew's RC Church, Newcastle today.

Allow me to drag you back to the 1840s. ( Incidentally McGurks were baptising children even in early 1830s in Newcastle)

Also on Census 1851 there are at least 10 McGurk couples living in Newcastle.

But back to yours.... I am having trouble unravelling what I picked up today.....

Firstly you juggle with Francis John or John Francis ?

Look at this ..

Born 1/12/1847 , bapt 12/12/1847 John McGuirk, son of Francis McGuirk and Alice McGuirk ( nee McGuirk) Godparents Francis GREGORY and Ann Hannah.

Born 22/1/1849, bpt 4/2/1849, Francis McGurk, son of Francis McGurk and Aloysia* McGurk ( nee Gregory), godmother Mary McGurk.

Now I will cut to Census 1851..

29 Close** Piece 2406- Folio 370
Head Frank McGurk, 34, blacksmith, born Ireland
Wife, Alice   "     , 27, b.Ire.
Son , Charles   "  , 7, b.Ire.
Dtr. Mary Ann   "  , 5, b.Newcastle
son JOHN     "   , 3, b.Newcastle.
son, Francis   "   , 2, b.Newcastle
son Thomas    "    7 months, b. Newcastle.

back to baptisms...;..

B.1/12/1859, bpt 4/12/1859, Patrick McGurke of "Cloth Market", son to Francis McGurke and Alice McGurke ( nee McGurke) godparents John Duffin and Mary Gormley.

B.28/1/1860, Bpt 23/2/1860, Mary Frances Magorg of "Close", dtr to Francis Magorg and Allice Magorg ( nee Gregory), godparents John Magorg and Ann Gregory.

There is something amiss with the last two... births too close together to be same mothers Huh?

Cloth Market one looks like it does not belong to the "set"... but parents recorded as Francis/Alice Huh.

I will have another look for bapt of Mary Ann.... with St Andrews and St Mary's ( the RC Cathedral been so close) some families used both churches....

I have lots of other McGurk details, but probably not yours

My McGurks are hard! Here is what I know, it may help..

In 1871 my McGurks were living at 116 Queen Street Newcastle
Frank.. Head 43 b.Belfast a Smith.
Alice, wife 47 b.Dundulk.
Mary Ann, dau 22 b.Newcastle, a Hat Trimmer in 1871.
John, son 21 b.Newcastle a Miller.
Catherine dau, 17 b.Newcastle.
James, son 15 b.Newcastle.
Frances, dau 11 b.Newcastle.

1881.. Frank Tce Gateshead. John and James are living together.
JOHN MCGURK, 30 b.Newcastle, Ale and Porter agent.
Margaret, wife b.Ripon York.
Beatrice B M dau, b. Newcastle 7.
Frank, son b.Gateshead 2.
JAMES MCGURK brother, 24 b.Newcastle, General Lab.

1881... 3 Nelson Street Gateshead, The Engineers Arms.
Alice McGurk, Head widowed. 55 b.Ireland.
Mary A McGurk 29 b.Newcastle, Beerhouse Keeper.
Frances dau, 21 b.Newcastle.

1891.. The Globe Inn, Chatham Road Gateshead.

Francis John McGurk (John McGurk) Head, Beerhouse Keeper.
wife, Margaret McGurk, Beerhouse Keeper.
sister, Mary Ann McGurk, Inn Keeper.

1901.. Alice is deceased by then.
Mary Ann is still in Gateshead a retired Publican.
Think John Francis and wife Margaret are deceased also.

Someone had sent me the 1851 census of Frank and Alice and children.. Was a little unsure if the same family.. All looks good except they seem a little obsessed with the name Francis!! if so. A John Francis, a Francis and a Frances.

They drive me nutty these McGurks!! I have been stuck at this point quite some time..

Thanks Ele.

Ele,

Just on Census 1851 for the moment.... I did NOT see a
"John Francis"... I saw a John and a Francis.... and I saw church baptisms to corroborate this.

The "Irish Naming Pattern" more or less laid down what parents should call their children. It was the "rules" of the day.... 1st son given father's father's name, 2nd son is given mother's father's name, 3 rd son is given father's name, 4th son given father's eldest brother's name, 5th son given mother's eldest brother's name, and in reverse for daughters.

Does the name Gregory appear in later McGurk records ?

Hi Michael,

Sorry, yes the census did say just John.. Maybe Francis was a confirmation name for my John?

The only Gregory I have come across was my Grandads step brother, he was named John Gregory McGurk b1906. He would have been first son born to a Francis McGurk b.1878, son of John Francis McGurk b.c1850. My Grandad also had always known himself as a Kenneth Francis McGurk but have recently found, after ordering his full birth certificate, that he was born just Kenneth McGurk, no Francis. His twin was also known as Clive William McGurk but according to birth certificate was only Clive McGurk?!

On the 1871 census they are also under MaGark.

Thanks, Ele..

I don't know if it is any help but the witnesses to the marriage of Edward Mulgrew and Margaret Cassidy, 5 April 1910, were Patrick McArdle and Mary McGUIRK - see attached copy of certificate

I don't know if this will help, but my great uncle was a man by the name of Frank (Francis) McGurk.  His sisters name were Alice, and Helen.  He was born in the 1880's, not for sure exactly, but could find out easily if you are interested.  He died on St Patricks day in 1969.
