Edith Treganza married Orlando John Bowden 10 June 1847 in St Helier Jersey.
She was from the Kenwyn area of Truro, according to her marriage certificate, the daughter of Samuel Treganza, a plasterer.
She may have been baptised 2 July 1820 in Truro - this being the only remotely possible baptism that I have found.
What I cannot find is any reference to Samuel Treganza! I had - for a time - thought him to have been baptised 9 November 1777, the son of John and Edith - which nicely fitted with calling his daughter Edith
But ... I have since found the burial of Samuel Giles Treganza, son of John and Edith on 6 February 1784.
Has anyone come across these names in their searches in Cornwall - any help appreciated!

Another thought has just occured about Samuel!! Orlando and Edith's first child, Horatio, was born in Truro in 1848, and their next children in Jersey. Did Edith return home to "Mum" for the birth of her first child? Horatio was born in Bosvigo Lane, Kenwyn, Truro - I wonder if someone with access to the 1851 census could check to see if there are any Treganzas in the area then. I have checked the Cornwall Census On-line project, but Kenwyn is not yet available there. Many thanks

Hello, it may be something of a very long shot, but how about the variant name TREGENZA which is a given MIDDLE name of my uncle Walter Tregenza Lane.
The Lane family married into the SAUNDERS family who lived in Truro for at least 8 years 1841 - 1851 when some of their children were born.
I wonder if there might be a family connection that brought them to Cornwall when the wife, Elizabeth Saunders came from Surrey?
Sorry to ramble, but it may just help.
Good luck

Thanks for that!
Not sure about any connection, because I have not come across the Saunders or Lane names at all - but worth bearing in mind. What is certain is that earlier generations did spell their name with an E - Tregenza - I have finally tracked down the 1851 census showing Samuel and his wife Jane spelling their names that way, and living in Goodwives Lane Truro. Samuel's birthplace on this census was given as St Mary's, and Jane's as St Winnow. Further investigations show that Samuel was buried St Mary's Truro on 5 February 1871 aged 87, and Jane on 18 September 1859 aged 79; I have Samuel on the 1861 census, again in Truro. An entry on the 1871 census shows Samuel and Jane's son in Sithney with another connection of mine, meaning that I am now sure that the Edith shown in my first post is the correct one - but absolutely nothing on Samuel and Jane ...! I cannot find baptisms for them or their marriage - so one step forward, and several back - as usual with family history! So if someone out there knows anything - I would be delighted to hear from them ....

Hi, Perhaps you are well ahead of me - but the 1841 census shows Samuel Tregenza 55 Plasterer at Kenwyn Street, Kenwyn, Truro with Jane, also 55, and children Edith 20, Charlotte and Laura both 15 - Dressmaker and Remale Servant respectively. Regards, Valan

Hi Casey Thanks for the interest and the various snippets of information! To answer some of the questions you raised - Henry Edward Bowden, John's brother, is with the family in 1861, but I have found nothing else, except for a possible death in Clifton Gloucestershire in 1875 which I have never got around to checking.
John's sisters Caroline and Edith - Caroline does not appear to have married; I have her on all the census returns to 1901; Edith disappears after 1871, so may well have maried.
Horatio turns out to be two separate people! The moral of that story is not to call your son Horatio! The first one was born in Truro in1848 and died in London in 1855, they had a further son Horatio born 1855 who died in 1856.
John Bowden did remarry although I have not yet found the evidence of his marriage. He appears on the 1881 census with his second wife Adelaide and a daughter Rosenia aged 12 - although I wonder if this is really Adelaide's daughter. I also have him in 1891, and Adelaide as a widow in 1901. I have not found his death yet though!
Samuel Tregenza junior married a Mary Ann Gerrans - sometime!! She died in 1860 and was buried in Tregony. I have the MI of her grave - the wife of Samuel Tregenza, and her father, mother and brother are buried with her.
But still not information on Samuel and Jane .....!!!
Thanks for your interest - if you come across anything else, I would be delighted to hear .......!!!

Thank you for that! I have seen this family tree before - or something very similar - in the searchroom of the Cornwall Family History Society. It is the unconnected part that concerns me ....!!! I cannot find any suitable baptism for Samuel, nor his marriage to Jane, and without Jane's maiden name, can make no headway with her either ...!! Kind of you to take the trouble to reply to such an old post - very irritating for me to see the dates and realise I am no further forward ....!! Thanks again!
