Hi Nigel,
I'll take a stab at it. I worked backwards on this one looking on the 1891 census for a George Green with a wife named Alice. I found one that looked promising, living in Handsworth. Both George and his wife were born in Worcestershire. George is 18 years old and a clock Finisher in 1881, lodging with a Robert Perry at 11 Owen St. Birmingham. In 1881 Alice Barnett was a 15 year old domestic servant living with the William Hunt Family in Foregate St., Worcester. Neither father appearing on the census.
In 1891 George is a bricklayer's laborer.
Does any of this sound reasonable!
Happy Hunting,

INDIA

Thanks for replying but see if you can help me with this one.  My mother has just obtained the Marriage Certificate for 1885 and George Green is 23yrs and is a stamper and his father is James Green who is a tailor.

Alice Barnett is 19yrs and her father is a Walter Barnett who is a moulder.

Both George and Alice were married in December in 1885 at St Pauls and both were registered as living at 83 Guildford Street.

I have their son's Birth Certificate where George Green is listed as a stamper so it must be the same man.  I can find no matches for the information above which was on their Wedding Cert in the 1881 Census.

They split up in the early 1890's so what happened then I dont know.

One match may be is that one of them had a sister called 'Lil' --  Lilly, Lilian etc

Thanks

Nigel

Hi Nigel,
I think that the George and Alice Green that I found on the 1891 census may be the correct family. Did they have a son named George? Do you have details? Date of birth, address.
On the 1891, both George and Alice have Worcestershire as their place of birth and I have found George on the 1871 census and guess what! His father is a tailor named James.
Here are the details.
Redditch, Worcestershire
George St.
James Green         H/M/37    Tailor    Headley Cross, Worcs.
Mary Ann Green     W/M/34               Ditto
Thomas Green       S/S/10                  Redditch
George Green        S/S/8                    Ditto
Charles Green        S/S/7                    Ditto
Martha Green         D/S/2                    Ditto
Walter Green          S/S/1m                 Ditto
RG10/3075  Folio 84  Page 20

James and family are still at George St. on the 1881 census.  George is not in the home and therefore I am certain that he is lodging.
Now Alice Barnett is proving a bit more tricky and I suspect that her father may have been dead by the time she got married. I have several marriage certs that give the father's name but don't mention the fact that he is deceased.
One possibility might be the Alice Barnet living with stepfather Colin Hawkes on the 1881. Alice's mother is Jane and I found the family of Jane Barnett on the 1871 census and she was already a widow.  I  would look for the death of a Walter Barnett in Worcester about 1870.
Hope this helps.

India you are brilliant !!!!!!

The son George was my grandad !  The story;-

George and Alice Mary had a son called Geroge Ernest born 1887 he also had a sister called Alice May born around 1891.
George and Alice ( parents ) then split some time after this when the children were very young and disappeared ( probably gone back to Worcester ) They dumped their children in a home and an Aunt Lil rescued them and bought them up living in Hockley, Aston Birmingham. We dont know who she was as again nobody shows up on the censuses
George Ernest was a ww1 soldier hero then died of T.B. 1930
Alice May died around 1991 almost 100 as Alice May Fisher

Any info no matter how remote or small is gratefully accepted

Many thanks

Hi Nigel,
Glad I could be of help.
Here are the details of George and Alice on the 1891 census:
Handsworth, Staffordshire
9 Hampton Court
Chapel St.
George Green   H/M/29    Bricklayers Lab     Redditch, Worcestershire
Alice Green        W/M/23                                  NK         Worcestershire
George Green   S/S/14                                                  Staffs, Birmingham
Frank Green     Bro/S/19                                 Redditch, Worcs.
RG12/2259/104/30

Now there is obviously a couple of errors on here. George should be 4 not 14 and Birmingham isn't in Staffordshire...but what the hey! We found em!!
I'm always happy to find Brummies as I are one myself!!
Cheers,
India in sunny Southern California.

Hi Nigel,
Here are the Green family that I could find on the 1891 census.
First James Green, George Sr's father.

Ipsley, Warwickshire (Ipsley is part of Redditch)
4 Oswall St.
James Green   H/M/57  Tailor Coat and Hand   Redditch, Worcs.
Mary A. Green  W/M/54  Needle Labeler?          Ditto
Florence Green  D/S/13  Errand Girl                   Ditto
Laura Green      D/S/10  Scholar                        Ditto
RG12/2480/95/51

Now George Sr's brother Thomas Green
Birmingham, Ladywood
52 Gt. Tundal St?
Hannah Goode Residence
Thomas Green    Ldgr/S/30    Brassworker       Redditch, Worcs.
RG12/2369/106/26

Now his brother Charles
Birmingham, Ladywood
16 Sherborne St. Court 4 House 1
Job Law Residence
Charles Green   Ldgr/S/29     Bedstead Fitter    Redditch, Worcs.
RG12/2369/126/18

I can't find Martha Green. I think she may have married a man named Smith but would have to find a marriage on BMD and nothing shows up.
So, as we say in Brum, that's yer flippin' lot!
Will look into the Barnetts next.
Happy Hunting.
