I have traced my g-grandfather back to a German seaman on the 1871 census. His details: Gustav Rink, 29, from Stralsund Germany, Ordinary Seaman, the vessel was called 'Carl' and the master was J Pankhow. The district was Durham. Gustav died about 4 years after marrying my g grandmother, who also died a few months later. I've had the marriage and death certificates, but none give any information about Gustav's background. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Hi LesleyHannah
Welcome to RootsChat !!
have you tried the "naturalisation" route ??
If you are lucky, and Gustav became a naturalised british subject, they will have his papers at Kew.
Check the topic(s) on Naturalisation for more details.
I'm a bit busy at the moment, but I'll check out some german sites when I've got a moment, but check the Immigrant Resources board for useful links, and also the "Useful tips" while you're at it.
Good luck, Bob

Thanks Bob.
No, I hadn't tried the naturalisation path, because to be honest I didn't know how to go about it - twelve months ago I hadn't even started my tree, so I'm learning all the time.
None of the certificates I've had - his marriage and death, my grandfather's birth and marriage, mention his nationality at all - and the bit about his father just has a line drawn through it. It's unfortunate that he seemed to come into this country, get married, have two sons, and die, all between censuses!!
Thanks for the tips anyway. I'm grateful. Lesley

Can't find any record of naturalisation - though did find a couple of my husband's German relatives! None of his documents (marriage or death or children's brith certs) mention his origins - it's only the early census that gives him as a seaman from Stralsund. I'm at a loss but as this is the only clue to my father's family I'm reluctant to stop trying.
Is there anywhere else I could look? Thanks Lesley

Thanks for the suggestions, Annie. I'll try them, and let you know what happens.
It's odd. I found Gustave Wilhelm Julius Rink on the 1871 census, a German seaman, on a vessel called 'Carl'. To be honest I'm guessing he must be my g-grandfather as I have three certificates - his marriage in 1855 (where he's named as Julius Gustav Wilhelm Rink; his death in 1889 (Julius Wilhelm Gustave); and his wife's death a few months later (described as the widow of Julius Wilhelm Gustive Rink).
The funny thing is none of the certificates mentions where Gustav came from and none mentions his father. His occupation is given as basket maker, but presumably that's because his wife's family, the Cramptons, were all basket makers from Leicester.
The only clue I've got to him being German (apart from the name) is that census which says he comes from Stralsund Germany. I've looked in the naturalisation records but cannot find him. I've been through earlier censuses here, just in case he had been living in the UK, but he's not there.
He died aged 30 (though this is open to debate) from cirrhosis of the liver. He may not have been a church-goer, but I'll definitely give the mission a try, if I can find it.
I really appreciate the help from people on this board and would welcome any other suggestions.
Lesley

Thanks Annie, that's very kind of you. Sometimes I think I'll never got to the bottom of this mystery. I came from Liverpool too - but live down south now. Best wishes Lesley

Hi, I've just looked at this website and find the surname Rink is to be found in all available 3 immigrant lists http://app.staatsarchive.niedersachsen.de/findbuch/
Have you tried rootsweb? Is there a page for your surname so that you can make an enquiry? Also on rootsweb have you tried joining any/all of their German mailing lists - you can write in English. good luck R

Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately I don't speak German, so couldn't use the site you recommended. I haven't had any luck with my postings so far but didn't know about the German mailing list. I will look into that, and thank you again for your help. Lesley
