I wonder if someone could help with a look-up in the 1851 Census for Stapleton. I'm looking for John Irving who would have been about 5 years old. His parents were Thomas and Jane Irving. It's possible that he may have been living with his mother's family named Kennedy (head of house would be Richard Kennedy, a carpenter).
Many thanks
John

Hi, these are also my Kennedys as well!, There is a Richard Kennedy aged 58 ( born in Stapleton) who was a master joiner, His wife Mary Kennedy nee Armstrong also aged 58 ( born in Bewcastle), my 4 times great grandparents. They also had a son called David aged 33 (my 3 times great grandfather) born in Stapleton who was a joiner, a daughter called Ann Watson aged 31 who was married ( I don't know who to) born in Stapleton, a son called James aged 28 born in Stapleton who was a joiner, a daughter called Margaret aged 21 born in Stapleton who was a dressmaker, a daughter called Elizabeth aged 19 born in Stapleton, a son called Archibald aged 17 born in Stapleton who was a joiner apprentice, a son called Clement aged 15 born in Stapleton who was a scholar, a grandson called John Irving who was 5 and born in Stapleton and a granddaughter called Mary Bell Kennedy aged 2 and born in Abbey Lanercost. They were all living at a farm called Longrigg in Stapleton at the time. I have more information on Richard Kennedy's parents and grandparents if you need it. Have you got any other information on the siblings of Richard and Mary Kennedy and any other further generations back?

Thanks very much for this information, its very helpful. Just a shame John Irving wasn't with his parents as I'd hoped! (Would it be possible for you to check if there's a Thomas Irving aged about 29 living in Stapleton in the 1851 census. He might be a widower.) I'm actually doing this research on behalf of a family friend who is the grandson of John Irving, and therefore the great great grandson of Richard Kennedy. I've found that John Irving also became a carpenter by trade when he moved to London with his uncle John Kennedy, also a carpenter, who I'm presuming is Richard and Mary's oldest son as he was aged 55 at the time of the 1871 census.
I'd certainly be interested in any more info you have on Richard Kennedy's parents and grandparents. Unfortunately I haven't got any more info on the siblings of Richard and Mary or their ancestors, but if I find anything in my future research I'll certainly let you have it.
Kind regards
John

Hi, Thanks very much for the message, I have known of Richard Kennedy and Mary Armstrong for a long time as my dad sat down with the vicar at Stapleton and went through the parish records looking for Kennedys about 40 years ago when he was in his teens!. I know the names of Richard Kennedy's parents who are a Ann Gillesby 1750 - 1834 and David Kennedy 1742 - 1816 ( a parish clerk) of The Breakings ( another farm in Stapleton). Richard also had a sister called Mary ( who is on the gravestone of her parents in Stapleton) 1784 - 1845. David Kennedy's father was called John Kennedy born 1720 of Mossthorn Gate (another farm in Stapleton). That is all I know for now. I did not know of Richard Kennedy's son John however. Would it be possible for you to give me any more info on him?
I am really sorry, I have had a good look through my 1851 transcripts and can't find a Thomas Irving anywhere. I also have the 1841 census for Cumberland though, do you want me to have a look for them in there?

Thanks very much for this additional info.
I have found John Kennedy in the 1861, 1871 and 1881 censuses living in Lambeth, London. He was already a widower, aged 45, by 1861 and is shown with two children Mary, aged 16, a pupil teacher, and Ann, aged 14, both born in Lambeth so he'd heen living there for quite some time. In 1871 he's living with John Irving and by 1881 he's living on his own. If you want images from any or all of these censuses just give me your email address and I'll send them to you.
If you can look for Thomas Irving in the 1841 census as well that would be most appreciated.
Many thanks
John

Hi, I have had a look on the 1841 census for Stapleton for you and have found a Mary Irving who was a servant at the time, a John Irving who was a agricultural labourer and another Irving who was about 20 but who had a christian name I couldn't really read very well so I'm very sorry but no concrete Thomas Irving I'm afraid. I did however look on another site for you that I've used for some of my ancestors in the past which has baptism, marriage and burial records for Stapleton from 1813 to about 1839 on it and found a Thomas Irving baptised on 2nd March 1823, a child of James Irving of Sikehead, a Husbandman and Mary Armstrong, Mother's abode Cracrop (Mary Armstrong was a spinster)
Hope this helps
