My Great Grandmother is proving to be very elusive.
Although Her name was Elivia Walster, in the 1871 census on Ancestry.co.uk, I found her under Elvin Walster. When I looked at the original entry, it was actually Elivia.
In the 1881 census she is Elivia Walasher In the 1901 census she had become Eliza Metcalfe (married by then)
She seems to be missing completely from the 1861 census ( probably has a completely different name)
I spent ages looking for her in the Birth Indexes at my local records centre and thought I had found her, sent off for the certificate only for them to call and tell me that the name I had requested wasn't the one they had on that particular entry.
So does anyone have any ideas where I can go next?
The details I have so far:
Elivia Walster B 1854 - Mansfield Notts Father John Walster (on her Marriage certificate - Self Employed) Married: John Metcalfe in Northallerton Yorkshire Son: Walter b 1898.

Hiya, that's a tricky one - having both a first name and surname that's easily mistranscribed.
Could you possibly give references for the cenuses you have found her on, or list the complete details of the households for us? It just helps when tracking - and a fresh pair of eyes might find her in the missing years.

I can't find her there at all. I've tried a few random variations of spelling the surname, but drew a blank.

Yes sorry my mistake, I did the first post from memory thought I found her in the 1871, but it was 1891.

Hi
I'm still totally stuck with this one. And it's just my luck that this one hasn't been transcribed on freebmd yet.
The worst part is i have all the names of my GG Grandparents apart from her mother - the gap in my cascading pedigree is driving me potty!
Any ideas where I can go next?
Thanks
A

Anita I think I've cracked it - or at least in part. You are going to have to suspend disbelief though and bear with me as it's taken me hours and I'm still not sure what I've found
I think the GRO may have rejected your birth cert application because you specified her father as John Walster? Just a guess but I think her parents were not married and her father was John Green.
Anyway - here are some census details
1871 4522 137 15 8 St Thomas Row Leeds Bk Byron Street John Green head 65 cylinder fitter Southwell Olivia wife 50 Sutton Walter son 21 moulder Mansfield Olivia dau 17 Mansfield Willoughby son 13 wire worker Barnsley Thomas son 9 scholar Leeds
1861 RG9 3446 46 27 Barnsley John Green head 55 grocer Notts Sutton Olivia wife 44 Notts Sutton Ann dau 20 Yorks Rotherham John son 16 Notts Stamford Walter son 9 Mansfield Olivia dau 7 Mansfield Willoughby son 3 Barnsley Mary Jane dau 7 months Barnsley Martha dau 7 months Barnsley
I cannot find a marriage for a John Green to an Olivia (or similar) anywhere in Notts or Yorkshire. However I find a couple of births
Walter Walster Mar 1852 Mansfield 7b 71 Martha and Mary Walster Sep 1860 Barnsley 9c 119
also a death that may be relevant although she doesn't appear on the census Rebecca Green Walster Barnsley Sep 1856
What do you think? Heather

I have been through every Walster entry on the Notts 1851 looking for a John who could be her father but no results.
Here are the Greens HO107 2124 112 6 Leeming Street Mansfield John Green head 45 coachman Notts Budby Olivia Green wife 33 Sutton in Ashfield Elizabeth dau 15 Barnby Moor Mary dau 13 Caunton Anne dau 8 Yorks Rotherham William son 1 Sheffield
I think Olivia's "Sutton in Ashfield" is maybe misleading. If you told an enumerator in 1851 Mansfield you were born Notts Sutton, that is what would be assumed. I think she could well be the Olive Walster baptised at Sutton on trent 7 May 1822 to Thos and Mary.
So where is little John from the 1861? Maybe he is the John Walster visitor age 4, born Sutton on trent, who is living in the household of a George Birkitt in Weston 1851?

Hi Heather
This does look very promising, and it all seems to fit together very well too. On her marriage certificate, it says that her father was a Business Proprietor, which fits in with the grocer thing. She called her son Walter too, which was not a family name on his father's side, but it would have been the name of her brother. And the places and dates all fit.
If it is, then I have my first unmarried couple in my tree.
I'm going to have another go at getting her birth certificate.
Thanks so much for taking the time to look into it for me. It's so true what they say about a fresh pair of eyes, and being able to think outside the box. So much for having a mensa iq!

Indeed and you're welcome I have a few puzzles of my own - but I think sometimes we get bogged down in the detail!
By the way there are a couple of people on genesconnected who have Willoughby Green, though they list him as born 1860. Might be useful to compare notes?

A little update in this one. I ordered a birth certificate for Olivia Walstow, as I couldn't find one for Elivia/Olivia Walster at all, never mind in the right time and place.
The address for the mother (who is recorded as Olivia Walstow)was Leeming Street (as in the census information) and the field for the father has been left blank, so I think i have my girl
