Hi Cougar,

I am also in Australia, researching the Stanley family.
Any chance any of your Stanleys made there way here. I am looking for William Stanley, Professor of Music, born Windsor/Berkshire 1820.

Hi there Di
My Stanleys came out on the Lightning in 1876 and settled in South Australia -
if you have any connections there that would be great as I only know of my immediate line - evidently have plenty of cousins etc that I haven't yet found.  My Grandfather disowned by family for marrying someone from another religion.

My William Stanley came to Australia (I dont know how) in 1837 and married at Parramatta. All the Stanleys down the line have all stayed in NSW as far as I know. I cant seem to get past him tho. I've enquired about birth records but cant find anything. In a book called "Australian Biographies" he is listed as coming to Aust in 1837, but no-one, not even his wives or children seem to know his exact birth date or his parents names.

Typical of the elusive Stanleys.
have you tried searching
http://www.searchforancestors.com/records/passenger_toaustralia.html
I got my info on my ggrandfather from the Adelaide archives attached to the main library.  You could perhaps try the one in Sydney - don't know how far away your are from them.
Is there any info in the Digger records?

Have you searched through this site - you will need church records prior to 1837 to find his birth

Sorry if you have already done this, but don't know what avenues you have tried

Hi Cougar

Don't know if this is of any help at all but I've just read an article where it appears that a Mr Stanley is the governer of the Coventry Gaol at the time of Mary Ball - the husband poisoner ( last public hanging in Coventry).  Doesn't give any more details about him but I can send you a pdf of the article if you're interested.

If you are looking for anything on Coventry, I think it's worth looking at John Russell's  Covkid website at www.covkid.org.uk.  It has all sorts of free useful information on it in the form of databases and for a small sum John will send you the databases on disk.  I have made email contact with him in the past and he is very knowledgeable about Coventry and its history.

Best of luck.

Hi Jenny,
Thanks for that, unfortunately John hasn't come up with my elusive lot - have his CD's and have been in touch with him.  He is certainly a fountain of knowledge for the area.  I would wonder what connection my lot had with Coventry and if it were fleeting except that the seemed to return there at times, eg birth and death of Mary Ann in 1853 and that I can't find most of the children anywhere after they were born so wonder if they went to live with grandparents.
Thanks again for your suggestion - all are gratefully received as I am sure I haven't tapped all resources yet,
Cheers, Sue in Oz (Cougar)
