Greetings:

Seeking any and all hints on the family connections of a man named William Fladgate, who appears to have been born around 1779 in or near Byfleet, Surrey. William married Jane Cox in Hackney, London in 180s. They became my 3X great-grandparents. The name later transmogrified to Fludgate, which was my mother's surname. Other rellies called themselves Floodgate. I think there is a connection, somehow, to the Fladgate family of Surrey, which is well documented. One sprig of that family helped found the Fladgate, Taylor and Yeatman wine firm of Portugal. But William's origins are still shrouded in mystery. My family tree -- still, of course, a work in progress -- is on line at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~hendred/tree.htm. I'd appreciate any and all clues or hints. I'd also love to chat with anyone who feels like yakking. Warm welcomes given to all cousins, distant and otherwise.

Hi there,

I am looking for information for a Mr. James Fladgate from the Chertsey area of Surrey.  My family are Shorter's from Chertsey/Longcross.  The were farmers and I believe worked for Rev. Tringham.  I have a newspaper article from around 1860's where my gr-gr grandfather won first prize in the ploughing match with  three horses and a driver.  Mr. Fladgate's name is in brackets.  Also the Daborn family comes up a fair bit on my search.

Have you come across any of the above names.  Are you Fladgate's from the Chertsey area of Surrey?

Kind regards,
Karen

Karen, hi:

Yes, my Fludgates appear to be from the Chertsey area and thereabouts. I, too, have often come across James Fladgate and the Daborn family. Their family tree appears to be well documented. But I have been unable to far to link in my ancestor, William Fladgate -- later known as Fludgate -- to that family. But I suspect the link is there. I just have to find it. I would love to be in contact with you to discuss possible links. Please e-mail me at email address removed by moderator to prevent spam - please use the Rootschat secure PM system for intitial contact

Look forward to hearing from you.
