Roskell family,Stockyn Hall,Holywell
« on: Thursday 21 April 05 06:29 UTC (UK) »

I am interested in the family of George Roskell born; 27-7-1777 Lancashire, son of Nicholas Roskell & Jennett Fox . George died;23-2-1847 Flintshire .Death certificate states  his proffession as Gentleman . Royal Commisson reports 1842 he owned Lead Smelting and Alkaline Manufacturing Works, and was first elected Mayor in 1836 .
George married(1); 22-4-1805 Holywell to Mary Ann Potts born; abt 1785 ,died; 22-8-1824 Flintshire daughter of  James & Jane Potts . 14 children .
(We don't know much about her ) .
married (2) ; Jane Sidgreaves .
George owned Stockyn Hall which I am told was previously owned by James Potts his father-in-law .
Son Nicholas Roskell born; 24-2-1819 Stockyn Hall,Holywell ,died; 3-9-1877 Penang .Commodore in P.O. married; Mary Charlotte Jones ,died; 25-2-1895 Southampton,Hampshire, daughter of Edward Jones of Wepre Hall . (info from Lancashire catholic Recusant's book page 205) .
Could anyone tell me where George and Mary are buried . They would have been buried Catholic .Son George Potts Roskell wife Ellen Roskell nee Wharton buried St.David of Panlasaph with George's sister Elizabeth Harnett.
And if anyone ever comes across a marriage for Nicholas Roskell to Mary Charlotte Jones that would be very helpful for us .
Anything about this family would be very helpful and interesting .
Thank you for any help.

Hello Michelle

I took a photo of George and Ellen's grave on Sunday as I live in Flint and know how important he was to the town.
If you would like me to send you a copy when I have the film developed just let me know.

Thank You Peter ,the information is very much appreciated .
Ellen Roskell (d;1873) was the daughter of George Potts Roskell (d;1879) & Ellen Roskell (d;1900).
Elizabeth Harnett was the younger sister of George Potts Roskell .
George Potts Roskell & Elizabeth Harnett nee roskell were children of George Roskell & Jane Potts from Stockyn Hall ,which the last I heard was still standing on farmland owned by a Jones family . The home still contained furniture etc but was in bad repair .  It seems a lot of history left to rot. Such a shame .
Thank You again . We hope if you come across any other Roskell headstones in the area you will be kind enough to tell us about them .

Hi just to let you know Stokyn Hall has now been renovated by one of the Jones family! and has opened  its doors for the first time this summer as a country house bed and breakfast!

Thank you very much. How wonderful to know that the house is serviceable again .
I wonder how many ghosts of the ancestors walk those halls .We were told that Stockyn Hall was also built on medieval foundations .So the original owners of so long ago will be mingling together .
Kindest Regards

Hi Michelle,
Here's a photo of Stokyn Hall taken in 1955, by my great Aunt. She and my grandparents were holidaying in England and revisiting grandfather's early days. Grandfather grew up at Stokyn Farm from 1902-1906. My Grandparents are in the picture, as are 3 members of the Jones family.
Regards Hazel

Thank you very much Hazel.
The photo is very much appreciated. One of the ancestors Mary Charlotte Jones married Nicholas Roskell from the same area but we are still to identify which family she did come from.

Hi Michelle,
Some links that may be useful.
Have you seen this page? It is about Wepre Hall and an Edward Jones and his son Major Trevor Owen Jones are mentioned. The page title is The History of Shotton - Deeside: 7 The Wepre Hall Estate, link http://www.angelfire.com/fl/shotton/history7.html

Also, this on Wepre Park has good section about Edward Jones home www.flintshireleisuretour.co.uk/pdfs/Wepre_Park_Booklet.pdf

Google books has A genealogical and heraldic history of the commoners of Great Britain...by John Burke Esq. p517 daughter of Edward Jones- link http://books.google.com.au/books?id=yshsAAAAMAAJ&lpg=PA517&ots=rdSvLuuuU3&dq=edward%20jones%20wepre%20hall&pg=PA517#v=onepage&q=edward%20jones%20wepre%20hall&f=false

On Google books, The history of the parishes of Whiteford and Holywell
published 1796 By Thomas Pennant at http://books.google.com.au/books?id=Z5suAAAAMAAJ&lpg=PA249&ots=cT0VdAdLus&dq=edward%20jones%20mine%20holywell&pg=PA186#v=onepage&q=&f=false
P186 about Stokyn and P249 onward about mines and Edward Jones. It's written in the old typeface so I found some changing of f's to s's as you read is necessary for it to make sense.

Thank you Hazel,
Some more interesting reading to look forward to. Its really bad form that the ancestors did not write down all this info for us but then we would probably find it boring.
Thank You
