Johnno, if you can hang on until tomorrow, I will look through my Dorking baptism's & burials, which go up to 1840 & see what I can dig up for you.  Do you have the baptism dates for the children?

Hi Johnno,
Sorry I couldn't get back to you yesterday but I was having internet problems.  This is what I found in the parish records for St. Martins, Dorking, which confirms your information. It looks like your family were the only one's in Dorking at this time.  No marriage's I'm afraid as my fiche doesn't cover that.

Mary Ann Elphick, cr. 28/2/1827, daughter of Joseph & Sophia of Mill Lane, Shoemaker.
Henry Elphick, cr. 28/12/1828, son of Joseph & Sophia of Mill Lane, Shoemaker.
Josiah Elphick, cr. 28/12/1828  As above.
John Elphick, cr. 5/4/1831 son of Joseph & Sophia of North Row, shoemaker
George Elphick, cr. 16/1/1833, son of Joseph & Sophia of Ebenezer Cottages, shoemaker.
Charles Elphick, cr. 18/6/1834, son of Joseph & Sophia of Ram Alley, shoemaker.
James Elphick, cr. 23/3/1836, son of Joseph & Sophia of Ram Alley, shoemaker.
Eliza Elphick, cr. 2/5/1838, daughter of Joseph & Sophia of Ram Alley, shoemaker.
Harriet Elphick, cr. 13/9/1840, daughter of Joseph & Sophia of Ram Alley, shoemaker.
EDWARD will not appear on my fiche as his cr, was after 1840.

BAPTISM of Sarah Catherine Elphick, 19/8/1799, daughter of George & Catherine,

BURIAL of William Elphick age 7 of North Row 3/7/1832
BURIAL of Josiah age 6 months of Horsham Road 24/3/1829

From the Capel PR's,

Phebe Elph-ick cr, 3/11/1775 daughter of William.

From The Surrey Super Index, the name ELPHICK appears in the following PR's,
CMB= Christenings, marriages & burials.

Capel CMB 1563-1840
Chaldon CMB 1564-1836
Clandon West CB 1756-1840
Cobham CB 1562-1840
Cranleigh CB 1653-1840 & M 1653-1837 & marriage witnesses 1754-1837
Crowhurst CB 1567-1840 & M 1573-1849
Dorking CB 1538-1840 (I think we've covered that)
Horley CMB 1695-1840
Leatherhead CMB 1813-1840
Lingfield CB 1781-1840
Molesey East C 1668-1840 & B 1681-1840
Surrey non-conformist registers MS5
Puttenham C 1562-1840, M 1562-1753 & B 1562-1852
Walton on Thames CB 1743-1840
Weybridge C 1771-1812 & B 1678-1812.

From Commissary Court of Surrey, Allegations for Marriage Licences 1662-1665, 1674-1770.

7/1/1761,Thomas Elphick of Cranley, abode 4 weeks, butcher, bachelor, 24, & Martha Richbell of Cranley, abode 4 weeks, spinster, 22; at Cranley.  John Heath of Guildford, cordwainer, 2nd s.  Both sign.

Out of interest I looked on the Sussex marriage Index & BINGO, here's the marriage between Joseph & Sophia.  Even better, it's by licence...loads of information,

Archdeaconry of Chichester Marriage Licence,  Date: 21 Mar 1823:
Joseph ELPHICK, bach wcof Jn. Maresfield
Sophia CHARMAN, sp Horsham wcof Wm. Sullington

Sullington, West Sussex,  Date: 22 Mar 1823:
Joseph ELPHICK, bach Maresfield wcop
Sophia CHARMAN, sp wcop

The name Elphick looks to be a very strong Sussex name, so a good idea would be to look in Sussex if you want to work back from Joseph, at least you know that Joseph's father was JOHN ELPHICK (wcof means with consent of father jn =John)

A good marriage  for the parents of Joseph might be this one,

Maresfield, East Sussex,  Date: 19 Apr 1794:
John ELPHICK
Ann SAYERS

Hope this is of some help, and was worth waiting for!

Jane

Hi John,
Wish I had a magic wand Grin but here are some suggestions,

1.  Going by Joseph's marriage details, he's under 21, so I would estimate he was born about 1803 or before.  Looking at the IGI index there are 2 baptism's for children with the parents, John & Ann Elphick, Elizabeth cr. 11/5/1807 & Mary Ann 4/8/1811, at St. Nicholas, Brighton, all around the right time-frame.

2.  I would ask for a look-up on the BVRI for the cr. of Joseph & also a look-up on the 1851, Dorking Surrey census & see if he states where he was born.  Also ask for 1841 census to see what they are up to, although it wont say where he was born, just if it was in Surrey or not.

Jane

It looks like the family did some major wanderings through Sussex & Surrey Wink

Hi John

This could help you out

1861 Census
RG9/440 Folio: 9 Page: 1
Royal Oak, Stone Bridge, Dorking
Joseph Elphick   abt 1803    Mansfield, Sussex, England   Head Victualler
Sophia Elphick   abt 1803    Horsham, Sussex, England   Wife

Although it says Mansfield on original I should think it is Maresfield.

Hi John

There are no children shown with them.

Here is their son John, still looking for others.

Which one are you particularly interested in?

Cordwainer is a shoemaker.

Send me a personal message if you would like copy of images.
