Russell family of Truro

My GGGrandfather was John Russell, born c1835 in Truro, or so he states on census forms.
I have now got his marriage certificate, which shows his father as Thomas Russell a Shoemaker.
John married Sarah Pullen in London 1856.  He was a Wood Carver who later became a Cheesemonger.
Searches I have done show no information about either. A search done for me of Baptisms show no John Russell in Truro.
Can anyone help?  I would like to get back further than the marriage of John.

found Thomas Russell 1881 census living in London aged 70 with a 30 year old wife. Thomas born in penryn Cornwall possible parents of Thomas are John and Ann with a chr of a Thomas Russell 1808 St. Gluvias which is about a mile away from Penryn
