Hi,
I am desperately trying to find any trace of the following family shown in the 1841 census:
HO107/142 Folio 38 Page 20 Long Rock Penwith Cornwall
UREN John 45 Yes Farmer UREN Alice 35 Y UREN Elizabeth 15 Y UREN Mary 10 Y UREN Ann 7 Y UREN Grace 4 Y UREN James 2 Y
Daughter Mary (Jane) married John JENKIN in Madron 07.05.1855 and they arrived in Sydney, Australia as assisted immigrants aboard the "Cressy" on 12 January 1856. On the shipping records they indicate that Mary Jane already had 2 sisters living in Melbourne at this time. No amount of imaginative manipulation of the Victorian Pioneer Index has revealed these ladies to date:(
Mary Jane and John JENKIN had 2 children, Rebecca Ann and Alice in Sydney NSW in 1856 and 1857 respectively and then twin girls down in Ballarat, Victoria (sadly, both of whom died shortly after birth) in 1859 and then they promptly disappeared.. or at least they have for me.
Alice, the only child to survive to adulthood was found residing in Darlinghurst, NSW in 1895 when she finally married. Her mother's name was recorded as "Wren" on the certificate.
I would dearly love to find more on Mary Jane and her sisters, so can anyone place my Uren family?

Hi Lyn
I searched Australia for about 2 years for one of my immigrant families and eventually found them back in England on the 1891/1901 Census - I eventually found deaths for 2 of their children on FreeBDM - so if you can't find deaths in Australia and haven't checked in England, could be worth a look. Mine returned to the area of their paternal relatives, so it is worth checking where both sides of the family came from.

Thanks Trish,
I had entertained that thought... I had thought that perhaps the sisters had already married by the time Mary Jane and John JENKIN arrived here in Australia in 1856. Maybe even arriving here in Australia under their married names.
I have actually found one that might fit:
Digger - Pioneer Index. Victoria 1836-1888
Surname: KENDALL Given Names: Eliza Event: D Spouse Surname/Father: Uren Thos Spouse Gvn Names/Mother: Alice FRANCIS Age: 59 Sex: Birth Place: Death Place: SHURST Year: 1885 Reg Number: 10337 Denomination: Parish: Fiche:
Given that my Elizabeth's parents were John UREN and Alice Thomas.... and knowing how names get changed around on death certificates, it is a strong possibility that she is my Mary Jane's sister.
I have also checked on the Uren family who were left behind in Cornwall throughout the various censuses and have found just Alice, the mother, living alone and widowed at 12 Tyringham Place, Uny Lelant.
I guess I just have to bide my time and chip away where I can.
Lyn

That does look like a possibility. Apologies if you already know the following - For $17 you can load the image down online - you could then check if the names in the index have been mistranscribed and it should give you the husband, children & time in Australia. Follow the BDM links at http://www.dvc.vic.gov.au/bdm.htm

Hi Just looking through my Uren family who were in Victoria. I don't have much (it is a side branch) except that Albert Francis Uren married Jane Turner in Victoria. Albert's Father was Edward Uren from Cornwell although I don't know where. His mother was Caroline Louisa Goyne (from Cornwell) and her parents were Francis Goyne and Susan Mills. If any of this sounds like it might have a connection let me know Christy

Hi Lyn Don't know if this is of any help but I have Sarah Ann Uren ( Uron ) marr Edward Batten 23 July 1871 in Cornwall. Sarah was b 1851 d 1929 Bendigo, Aust. Her parents were either Thomas and Elizabeth or Nicholas and Grace the latter being more likely as she had children called Lillian Grace and Frederick Nicholas just 2 of 10 children. Maybe you have found some of these names. Good hunting Sani
