MITCHELL
« on: Tuesday 07 June 05 16:11 BST (UK) »

Whilst telling my mum how chuffed I was for getting the family tree back to 1782 she suddenly leapt up and disappeared out of the room coming back a few minutes later with a family tree that had been sent to my late Aunt in 1990!!  Could she not have mentioned this before??  Anyway, the research that I'd got joined up with this tree at the point where it got a bit wobbly and our family branched off so with the two trees together I can go from my 3 year old right back to her ggggggggg grandfather Richard Mitchell who was born in 1596 in Ardinly.  However I can find nothing about the family before that.  Richards children were all christened in Ardinly but there is no record of his marriage to Mary or of their burials or of those of their children in the Ardinly area of the Sussex Online Parish Clerk site...so does anyone know where they came from or where they went after Ardingly?  One child, the youngest George was buried in Eastbourne in 1715 and had children by his first wife christened in Cuckfield but that's all I have...can anyone help??

Don't be too quick to claim the Hertfordshire one.   There will be many others which are not yet on CD or internet!

I thought it would be done in tapestry by now!   I have the parish records for Ardingly from 1558 - 1812.   I cannot see a baptism for a Richard Mitchell at that time.   There is one in 1622, son of Richard.   Would that be his child?   Ardingly and Cuckfield are very close (I live in one and work in the other) and there are other small villages around there where they might be.   What was Mary's surname?

Working a bit in the dark - no dates for the children's baptisms - this could be Richard & Mary:

Richard Michell m Mary Weller
Horsham, West Sussex,  25 Sep 1614

No other details shown in the index.

Have you looked for any wills - that may give you some clues.  However, I have to say that while not impossible, it will be much harder to take your tree back further.  You will be into the realms of manor records and the like, with all the pitfalls of dodgy or inconsistent spelling and entries in Latin.  Unfortunately they are not on the internet and will have to be tracked down at the record office.  I wish you luck though.

Thanks Nell,  The childrens christening dates, all in Ardingly, are:-

Richard 17.02.1622
Thomas 15.02.1623
Mary 13.08.1626
Martha 01.02.1629
John 26.12.1631
Mildred 26.10.1634
George 29.09.1639 buried Eastbourne 14.01.1715

But you're right, it'll be very tricky...I was just hoping to stumble across someone who'd got there first.  Not sure I'm nearly addicted enough to start learning Latin!
