I had a quick look at the 1861 census on Ancestry.  Sorry I couldn't find your James. 
I don't know if these are any help to you:

Head CHARLES CROWDER b. 1840 Shoreditch Victualler
sister FANNY JANE CROWDER b. 1847 Cambridge Heath, Midx. Barmaid
Living at Goss Street, Camberwell RG9/385 folio 2 page 22

Head GEORGE CROWDER wid. b. 1811 Southwark Master Baker
daughter MARGARET b. 1842 Camberwell.
Living at 10 Stamford Terrace RG9/378 folio 310 page 2

While looking at the index, I noticed a couple of Crowder families living in the surrounding areas - Lambeth/Bermondsey, but I'm afraid I didn't have time to look at them closely.  If  I have time later I'll have another look and check the other censuses.

Thx sandie ....i know charles robert crowder b1898 greenwich and his father was charles henry crowder b 1874 peckham but maybe james wasnt charles henry crowders father or maybe he just isnt listed but thx for looking appreciated

Sorry I haven't got back earlier.

I had another look at the '61 census, but still no luck so looked in 1871.  I couldn't find 'Crowder' living in Peckham, but did find this family, not saying it's the James you originally asked for, but one was born in Peckham so may be related to yours in some way.

Head JAMES CROWDER b. 1835 ?
Wife SUSANNAH MATILDA b. 1836 Lambeth
daughter ELIZABETH ANN b. 1868 Heston, Middx.
son JAMES ROBERT b,. 1866 Peckham
son WILLIAM EDWIN b. 1870 Heston, Middx.

Living at Cook Cottages, Heston
RG10/1313 folio 116 pg.1
