Turner family 1911 help or advice needed
« on: Tuesday 16 June 09 18:27 UTC (UK) »

Could anyone help me to find the Turner family on the 1911 census, I have tried the free site but can find nothing, I don't want anyone to use credits but if someone could see what they can find, maybe fresh eyes could spot something.  The family lived in St. Johns Wakefield, Yorkshire Charles Turner was born about 1861 he was a house painter and paper hanger,  I do not know the name of his wife (his first wife was called Ellen Pyrah and died in 1893 - he had a daughter Marion with her born 1890) also a son Norman born in 1909 (this son must be to his second wife) I would like to find out the name of his second wife, I have tried looking for a marriage but found nothing.  Any help would be very much appreciated.
Many thanks Susan

Hi Susan

Assuming Charles was married in Wakefield there is a marriage in 1908 of a Charles Henry Turner married to either Emma Taylor or Martha Holmes 9c 83 Q4. I'll see what else come up.

If I've used it correctly, theres a MARINE Turner born 1890 in the Household with Charles, and a Heptonstall couple, but no Norman ?

The trouble with the 'Other Person in Household' feature is that it doesnt allow you to specify their Birth Year  .... and theres actually 2 Normans plus a Walter Harold Norman Turner in Wakefield !

One of them has a YoB of 1910, but its not easy to see who he was with - altho its not Charles !

I think you may have to get Normans Birth Cert to determine his mothers name  ....  Smiley Angry

Hi

I agree with your findings LKL.

I have been unable to find any Charles with a Norman, Emma or Martha so it looks like Norman was probably his second wife's son. Having said that there was a Norman Turner born 1909 Wakefield if I remember correctly. I wonder if Charles was still a widow in 1911 and his marriage came later?

Charles is still a widower in 1911so the marriages I found are not correct.

From 1911 to 1920 there are no marriages for a Charles Turner in Wakefield. He must have married elsewhere but there are too many to pin down.

As LKL suggested I think it is going to have to be Norman's birth certificate. The only problem is if he took Charles' name afterwards.

Did Norman marry? Although once again he most probably put Charles down as his father.

Any other clues? Undecided

Norman Turner did marry in 1934 a Gladys Williamson. (who had two sister who never married - I believe they lived in St. Johns Wakefield, but have not looked for them yet.)  Norman took over the family Painting and Decorating business that his grandfather another Charles Turner started. I knew that he had a sister Marion but did not realize she was so much older than him. I knew Norman about 30 years ago and his son David Williamson Turner (they are both deceased) I don't believe David had any children so there is probably no Turners left now.
Kind regards Susan
