I am searching for information about my grandfather James Moore who I know was stationed at Dundalk Military Barracks in 1900. (8th. Hussars)
Is anyone aware of any available record, ie Census 1901 or Military records to assist.

Hi:
Just joined this list and saw your mesage - I too had one of 'my lot' stationed at Dundalk Barracks in the 1860's (and married there) tracing him was difficult as British military records are kept at Kew, and can only be accessed by visting there and searching manually. You may be able to trace your people earlier in the 1881 UK census which is available free online at familysearch.org - but if you already know that, apologies!

PS
1901 Census for Ireland is available on microfilm via the LDS Family History Centres - there are 15 rolls for Dundalk though so you would need to identify which census area the barracks was in.

Thanks for your interest, I will follow up. Kew is out of the question at the moment as I am in Australia. I think there are some LDS sites here, so will start making some inquiries.

Thank you also for your interest.
It has previously been suggested (Regimental Secretary QRH) that the 8th Hussars would have been in S Africa at the time I am interested in. However because a have a birth certificate registered in Dundalk on 20th February 1901 with Dundalk Military Barracks as the address, at least some family members must still have been resident at the Barracks. I am guessing that it is possible, as an Instructor, my grandfather may have been involved with recruiting and training hence not automatically posted overseas with the Regiment

Here's a little bit of history!
An uneventful decade and a half proceeded the 8th Hussars third tour of India in 1879, when they moved almost immediately after landing to Afghanistan to bolster Roberts force which they did for the final year of the second Afghan war. They stayed on the subcontinent until 1889 when they moved back to England, spending three years at Norwich where they became immensely popular. In 1899 they were mobilised for South Africa where they had broken out against the Boers. The 8th joined the 4th Cavalry Brigade on the advance to Pretoria which was taken in June 1900. The minor skirmishes were punctuated by some more major conflicts like Diamond Hill and Belfast which pushed the enemy back until by October, only mopping up or driving had to be done which however lasted for two years. At Geluk the 8th were surrounded but fought themselves out of trouble, and in the summer of 1901 the regiment was split up into two detachments operating in a semi-independent capacity, until peace was signed in may 1902 by which time the Royal Irish had lost fifty four lives in the war. Six years in England was followed by another tour in India until they were mobilised for the great war, arriving in Marseilles in November 1914.
I wonder if he was WW1 also ? do you know?

Do you know anything else about him? Was he wounded ? - that could be the reason he was home earlier!!
