Where can i find the gloucester journal archives?
« on: Wednesday 08 June 05 16:59 UTC (UK) »

Does anyone know if the gloucester journal archives are available online.

If not does anyone have access to them that could do a lookup for me please.

Mentioned in dispatches for the meritorious service medal on 1st June 1918 for company quartermaster sergeant F C Williams.

Thanks.

Hi Kev,

As far as I am aware they are in the Reference Library, in Gloucester.

Will be in sometime next week and will have a look unless someone beats me to it.  Grin

Thanks for that.

I had a message from Tralee saying the same.

Tralee offered to go if i had no other offers.

I said to not make a special trip as it isn't crucial.

BUT if anyone is going anyway it would be great if they could look for me.

This is the info i was sent by the curator at the glocs regiment museum:

"Checking the database the record for FC Williams senior it shows him to be a Company Quartermaster Sergeant and with his number of 256008.  He was awarded the MSM on the 1st January 1919 having first been mentioned in despatches on the 30th May for 1918 for distinguished service in Italy.  There is a reference for this, although we cannot confirm it, in the Gloucester Journal in the 1st June 1918.  Our record shows that he enlisted with the Bristol Rifles 4th Battalion The Gloucestershire Regiment TA in 1889 and transferred to the 6th Battalion The Gloucestershire Regiment in 1907 and served with them throughout the First World War.  He was finally discharged in 1924 after 35 years service as a volunteer and a territorial.  A note here shows that he had three sons all of whom served in the Regiment"

Very much appreciated.
