Hi,

The 1851 records Sarah Barnes, age 67, a widow living with her unmarried son, Frederick, age 23, Ag Lab at The Market Place, Hatfield.

Thought this might help you track down Thomas.

Thank you Peter and Joe,
That has helped piece a little more together about this family.
My husband is descended from Charles BARNES who moved to Putney and was also a blacksmith.  I wondered if Thomas senior was  a blacksmith too.

Hi

I am serching for Frederick Barnes (dob unknown) who married a Jane (maiden name unknown) and lived in Fulham.
They had a son Frederick born 1867 who married Alice Lester and had the following children

Alice 1889
Annie 1890
Grace 1900

Do you think there could be a connection?

Hi Val,
Barnes is a fairly common name.  Have you found Frederick in any census?  Should give you an idea of place and dob.

The above Frederick BARNES b. 1828 Hatfield was still unmarried and living in Hertfordshire in 1871.  Can't find him 1881.  Perhaps he had died.

P.S. looks as if he died 1873 in Hatfield.

I have now found that 3 of Thomas and Sarah's children became blacksmiths/farriers: Thomas, Charles and Henry.  I would love to know if Thomas senior was a blacksmith too.
Are there any trade directories for Hatfield 1810 -1850?
Could someone find them in the 1841 census to see if Thomas was stil alive? (he was dead by 1851).
   Many thanks

Have now found Sarah in 1841 census, already a widow, living in Hatfield.  So would be interested in finding Thomas BARNES in a trade directory, if one exists.

Hi Bearkat,

The 1823 edition of Pigots Trade Directory for Hertfordshire includes an entry under Hatfield as follows -

Blacksmiths.

Barnes Thos   ...   Back Street.

Hope this resolves your problem.
