Long Eaton - coroner's inquest 1940
« on: Wednesday 08 June 05 23:04 BST (UK) »

Hi,

One of my Grandfather's cousins died in a railway carriage in 1940 at Trent Station, Long Eaton. His death certificate was issued by Arthur Whiston(?) the coroner for the county of Derby. An inquest was held on 4th Dec 1940.

I've never had to find a coroner's report before so if some kind soul could point me in the right direction I'd be really grateful. As this event was in 1940 am I likely to be able to get a copy of the report as it's less than 100 years ago?

I'd also like to find out if there were any newspaper reports about the inquest but can't work out which would be the likely newspapers of the day!

Thank you
tabitha

Tabitha

I would expect a report on an inquest either in the Nottingham Evening Post or the Derby Evening Telegraph. These will be the easiest sources as it can be difficult getting reports from the Coroners Office. It depends on the detail you require. If newspaper reports will do I could try to find it for you. Let me know.

Hi Jane,

Thanks for your reply.  I've been just emailed the coroner'sofficer to see if they will be willing to help......not holding my breath though  Grin

I wasn't sure which newspapers this was likely to have appeared in.  I was getting a bit confused with whether to look in Derbyshire or Nottingham - from you post I can see that it could have been either.

If you have access to the newspapers you mentioned and it's not too much trouble, I would really appreciate anything you could do to help me.

The details from the death certificate are below - I'm not sure if the coroner or the papers would be able to add anything, but you never know unless you look do you?

Name: Harold Jones (Private in the 70th Btn Leicestershire Regiment)

Date of certificate/inquest: 4th December 1940

Age: 25 years

Cause of death: The passage of a rifle bullet through his head - self inflicted!

Place of death: found 2nd December. Railway Compartment, Trent Station, Long Eaton.

Coroner: Arthur Whiston(?)

Address of deceased: 77 Carr Lane, Cleethorpes.

From relatives that remember this man (who won't discuss his death!), he had just returned from a posting in India.

Thanks for you help Jane.

Tabitha

I have a photocopy of the Beeston Gazette & Echo report on the inquest, (a local Nottinghamshire weekly paper). He was returning to duty after leave. As I hadn't relised it was a suicide I found it quite disturbing but I am relieved to know that you already knew from the death certificate. It just shows how awful the war was and how frightening for those having to take part.

If you send me a PM with your email adress I can send you a scan.

Trent station is in Long Eaton, Derbyshire but just on the border with Nottinghamshire. I live about 4 miles away in Nottinghamshire but because things cross over the boundaries I read Derbyshire queries as well as the Nottm ones.
