Lauraine, if you haven't already done so, you should download a copy of the marriage certificate at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk - this will tell you the names of their parents and enable you to find the family before they emigrated.

Forfarian: will be going to Scotlandspeople to try & find birth date & parents of both Alexander NICOL & Isobella (e) Shand. No idea of Brown or Betsy - should I be looking for death certs on Scotlandspeople? Yes, definitely. It would be unusual for a 16-year-old (Betsy) to have emigrated leaving her family behind. Brown would have been 26 by 1881, and could have emigrated, but he isn't in the index to the 1880 US census or 1881 Canadian census.
You should start with the 1861 and 1871 census entries for the family. If these children are missing from the family then, it's a good indicator that they probably died young. (Of course they just might be staying with grandparents or other relatives or friends so unless you find evidence of a death you can't assume they died.)

Hi Lauraine,
Bryce Nicoll died on 5th November 1939 in the Royal Asylum Montrose. She was 81 years old and single. Her parents were Alexander Nicoll, Flax Dresser (dec'd) and Isabella nee Shands (dec'd). Her usual address was 14 Robert Street Arbroath and the informant was Catherine ?, House Steward.
Hope this helps. Isobel (edinburgh)

Hi Lauraine,
Should have included that cause of death was 'Senile Decay'.
I'm assuming that the Royal Asylum is what is now Sunnyside Hospital in Montrose. It is a psychiatric unit.
Regards, Isobel
