Sussex marriage index please- ROGERS
« on: Thursday 09 June 05 09:10 BST (UK) »

Can someone please look at the Sussex marriage index.

Looking for James ROGERS b abt 1781 Rye and his wife Sarah b abt 1783 Hastings.
My first siting is of them running The George Hotel, Ashford, Kent in 1813.
My ancestor is their (first?)son George b abt 1808.Others followed in Ashford,
William 1813
Ann 1815
Sarah 1816
James 1818
Charles 1822.

I only discovered their Sussex connections yesterday,as we spent a couple of days in Kent(mostly at the Archives- poor old hubby  Grin)

Many thanks,

Carol

Hi Carol,
This looks like them, or is it?  If their first son was born 1808, then it's not them Huh  The only other marriage between a James Rogers &  a sarah is back in 1788, so not your James.

Oh Jane

This certainly looks like the couple I described doesn't it.......in which case rude words, rude words and even more rude words  Angry

The parish records for baptisms in Ashford were really difficult to read, and I'm not 100% certain I found 'my' George b 1808 ish.But all the other family names and dates seemed to fit.Luckily the family (minus George as he was married and in London)were still there in 41/51 and then son took over in 1852 when dad died.
It wasn't till the 1851 census that I discovered that they originally came from Sussex.

Now have I been following the wrong lot....and do I have to drag hubby back to Kent again soon  Grin Grin Grin

Oh dear- so elated yesterday- so p****d off today !
He did leave a will so maybe that will mention the right family members?

Thanks Jane for finding them so quickly.

Back to the drawing board,

Carol

Jane

How complete is this Sussex marriage index? I am only presuming they married there,as I couldn't find them in Ashford parish records. However that might not be the case of course.

Why oh why did our ancestors make it so hard for us to trace them?   Huh

Thanks

Hi Carol,

To the best of my knowledge the Sussex Marriage Index is complete.  I think you might have the wrong James & sarah because as I was looking at the details I found it odd that George was born in 1808 then a 5 year gap to the next child in 1813, of course these things happen! How did you get back to James b. 1781 & his marriage to a Sarah?

PS.  I did find the baptism of a James Rogers 26/9/1780, Baptist, Rye son of John & Ann...any help?
