Hi

I am looking for references to Jabez Barrowclough, Sarah Gaulk and Hannah Meddowcroft in Sowerby, near Halifax.

Jabez, possibly spelt as Jebus or Jabes, married a Hannah Meddowcroft in Sowerby in 1801. He seems to have subsequently married a Sarah Gaulk, of Sowerby, in Manchester in 1807 by whom he had at least 3 children before his death.

I need to confirm if it is the same Jabez Barrowclough (or Barraclough) who married both women. It seems likely as the potentially second wife was also from Sowerby. 1) What happened to the first Hannah Barrowclough, nee Meddowcroft? She seems to have been the daughter of a William. 2) The IGI does not list a birth for a Sarah Gaulk, but in later censuses info she does give her place of birth as Sowerby.

Haven't come across the surname Gaulk before. Could it be a corruption of Gaukroger, which is relatively common in the area?

Marrying in Manchester, they may not have been familiar with the surname.

Hi

Thank you for the pointer towards Gaukroger. I've just run it through the IGI and it certainly is a name found in that area, and comes up for Sowerby - even on a couple of occasions being spelt Gaulkroger.

As I have tried other variations of spellings eg Caulk, it seems most likely. (Caulk seems to only appear in Norfolk/Suffolk) I've now got to find a way of proving it one way or the other!?
