I am trying to find the death record for Jane SCOTT nee CHRISTIAN.
Jane was born in Sorbie 1817. She married John SCOTT 1843, Penninghame, Wigtown. They had 8 children there,
I know that Jane died between 1881 - 1891 as she was on 1881 census aged 61 a widow (44 King St) She is not on 1891 census.
I have searched sxotlands people and can't find her anywhere. I have tried every surname variation i can think of and still can't find her. I would love to find out her parents names and progress further with this line Can anyone help me with this at all? Many thanks in advance Regards Amanda

Just to update, i have gone though Scotlands People (yet again) and still can't find her anywhere. I found her husbands death record which gives her name as Jean CHRISTIE. I hadn't tried that one, so off i went again, and still nothing. She has got to be there somewhere!

No chance she slipped across the border on a visit?

Yeah, i suppose anything is possible really isn't it? Just makes the search harder if that is the case. If she died die in England, would her death still be recorded in Scotland? I would imagine, as her family were still in the area and her husband was already buried in Wigtown, that her final resting place would have been Wigtown too.
Thanks for your reply Amanda

It depends whether any of her children went south and she went to live with one of them after the death of her husband, a daughter perhaps who would look after her mother in her old age. Or may be she just went to visit one of them knowing it was unlikely with her advancing years she would see them again and the visit proved to much for her.
e.g. From FreeBMD Deaths Dec 1888 SCOTT Jane 80 Carlisle 10b 306
The 1881 census shows at least three Jane Scotts of a similar age in Cumberland including one in Carlisle aged 73, so I'm not saying the death registration above is your Jane Scott - it rather depends where your Jane Scott's 8 children were around the time of her death. If she did die away from Wigton it would have been an expensive business to take the body back, depending on how far away she was when she died. If she died in England her death would be recorded in England not Scotland. The body could not be moved back to Scotland or buried in England without the necessary death certificate obtained from the local registrar.
If her death in England is a possibility then it is whether you know where all her 8 children were likely to have been in 1888. From that information you can check whether there is a possible likely registration in England in one of the areas they lived in. There are quite a few Jane Scott deaths registered in 1888 but not that many with her advanced years.
Besides the one above for a Jane in Carlisle there are only two others for woman in their 80s, the first being to old. Deaths Jun 1888 SCOTT Janet 87 Shifnal 6a 400 Deaths Dec 1888 SCOTT Jane 80 W. Derby 8b 247 SCOTT Jane 80 Carlisle 10b 306
The ones is their 70s are a bit to young. So if she did die in England in 1888 and they got her age right on death, it is either in Carlisle or W. Derby (West Derby being part of Liverpool). Are either of these two places likely? If she was buried with her husband then the cemetery or church burial register might indicate where her body came from. If she wasn't (presuming he wasn't buried in a common grave) then it would seem more likely she died further away if she isn't with him.

Hi Valda,
Thanks for all your help with this one.
The one in Carlisle can't be her because in 1881 census she was still in Wigtown age 61. so in 1881 she would have been about 68.
I also know her husband had dies in 1874, i have found his death record.
As far as i am aware her children did still stay in the area and that her granddaughter was the one who moved away, moving to Glasgow. I will have a further look into that however just in case i am wrong.
Many thanks for all your time taken to help me out. It really is very much appreciated
Amanda
