37th brigade help.

in the newspaper obituary of my great-grandfather it says that he served in the 37th Brigade and then it is unclear from the grammar of the artcle whether this was in the Russo-Turkish was . He was a gloucester man originally. Would any one have any idea what regiment is being referred to here.He was born in 1857 if thats amy help. I would appreciate any ideas any one might have. Can't ask elderly relatives. All deceased

this site has a lot of information on early divisions and mentions the 37th Brigade Depot at Bristol.

Does the obituary mention the Russo-Turkish War 1877-1878. I did not think we were involved.

If your relative went to pension, his personal Army record will be at PRO Kew. You will need to know the Regiment which would be 28 or 61, or that's the idea.

Yes Roger, it specifically mentions the Russo_Turkish war and I didn't think we had any involvement either so very confused indeed.Any other advice gratefully received. Is the 37th what eventually became the Glos.Regiment?

No, brigades, divisions etc. are forrmations and battalions, regiments are units. 28th and 61st Infantry Regiments became 1st and 2nd Battalions Gloucestershire Regiment in 1881 (Cardwell Reforms).

I did not study formation HQ's in peace time, only wartime. 37th Brigade may have been an HQ Staff which controlled units in the West Country. The Army List 1877/78 may well list it. Some Public libraries have them.
