Death look-up

Could some one please help I am trying to find out where and when Olive Murtle Searles[nee Sayer]died.And if she had any children.
I only have one mention of her and that is in 1919 when she married my grandfather Alfred Searles in Wellington.[folio no 4879]. Its possible that she is buried in the Wellington area somewhere.

I believe that my grandfather may have married Olive Sayer, and then at some point divorced her, before marrying my grandmother in 1942,Alfred died in Wellington in 1943.
It was not common knowledge that Alfred had been married before and when my grandmother find out sometime after having 6 children to him she refused to give their following 2 children his last name.
Any help at all would be appreciated.

Hi again Jericho,

If you have the marriage certificate of Alfred to your grandmother it should have a reference to the divorce of either party, indicating no impediment to marriage. In my experience this might be a stamp or written statement e.g. "Divorce Decree Absolute 'dated' ". Another way to check would be the Intention to Marry Notices. If you know the date and place your grandparents married in 1942 I'll look for you.

I wonder if Olive remarried?

Hi Riley,
Have my grandparents marriage certificate
and Alfred is listed as bachelor,it is quiet apparent that he never told my Grandmother about his previous "marriage"
until she either found out or he told her
about 1936.Just before their last two children were born.
According to my aunt she never told the last two children they had different names and my aunt only found out 10 years ago when she went to apply for a passport.My grandmother told another son just before she died, but he told no one about it,and she would not discuss it futher. [Just another family secret that no one was meant to find out about.]

I know that it seems strange, it did to me, but apparently they used his last name of Searles,but she registered them under her maiden name of Andrews without tell anyone.I don't even know if my grandfather knew.

Yes I know it sounds strange but they did infact marry a few months before he died,he married my grandmother Ethel Dorothy Andrews on the 9th March 1942, and Alfred died on the 7th Jan 1943.They apparently did things back to front had 8 children first and then married.When I questioned my two aunts recently about it they hadn't even been aware they did infact marry.My grandmother died in 1981, and believe me she would have been the last person in the world I would have suspected of having skeletons in the closets.

This may not help a lot, but I’ve found the SEARLES in the NZ electoral rolls for Wellington City:

1919 Wellington Central Roll, p.137
#6770 SEARLES Alfred, 50 Webb Street, fireman

1919 Wellington Central Supplementary Roll, p.51
#10868 SEARLE Olive Myrtle, 35 Webb Street, married

1922 Wellington Central Roll, p.90
#4472 SEARLES Alfred, 35 Webb Street, fireman
#4473 SEARLES Olive Myrtle, 35 Webb Street, married

1925 Wellington City and Supplementary Rolls:
No mention.

The different addresses in the 1919 Roll suggests a typographical error in the listing for Alfred. Webb Street runs E-W at the southern end of central Wellington City, and lies against Brooklyn Hill.

Can you tell me where Alfred SEARLES and Ethel Dorothy ANDREWS married on 9th March 1942? I still think the Intention to Marry notice, if there is one, might shed some light.

thanks for the latest update I thought that maybe you have forgotten about my request,yes I was very interested in the latest info,still not sure if this is the right track, but it certainly looks promising.
My information is that Alfred and Ethel Andrews got married in the Wellington Registrar's Office,around March 1942,however their first child was born in 1929. The last known address that I have for Alfred and Ethel is Liverpool Street Trentham. So if it is the same Alfred as I suspect I wonder if he got divorced and what became of Olive Myrtle and children [if any] of that marriage. Is it possible that she died ?
One of life's little puzzles..............

Hi Jericho,

This might be one of those difficult ones... I searched for the death of Olive Myrtle as SAYER and SEARLE/S from 1921 - 1943 inclusive, but no luck. I ran out of time to look for a marriage under either name, so I'll try next week.

I decided to leave the ITM Notice for the time being, but if I get time next week I'll look it up.

Hi Jericho,

I searched for the marriage of Olive Myrtle as SAYER and SEARLE/S to 1956, but no luck.

That suggests that she might have died under either surname after 1943, or left the country. I'll check deaths after 1943 for you.
