Divorce.

Could some one please tell me where divorce records in New Zealand are kept for the period 1920-1950.Would they be lodge with the Registrar General with BD&M'S in Lower Hutt or elsewhere.

Hi Jericho,

I believe that Archives NZ hold divorce records, although these are restricted for 60 years; see Christchurch City Library for more background: http://library.christchurch.org.nz/FamilyHistory/MarriageDivorce/

By the way, the Internal Affairs BDM Office in Lower Hutt closed a couple of years ago, and the only office is now in central Wellington City (AND they jacked up the certificate prices from $9 to $26!).

Thanks for the update,it shows how long ago I last ordered any thing from New Zealand.I've obtained quiet alot of certificates from home in the past,but since more information on my maternal side has come to light it looks as if I may have to obtain some more.Is it still
possible to get some one to sight certificates or do you now have to purchase the full certificate.Thanks

As far as I know you have to buy the full certificate. To save money it's often a good idea to check the holdings of the NZSG to see if they hold any information.

Which branch of NZGS would I be best to contact and do you have an address and of course how much would they be prepared to look up for me at any one time.As at the moment I seem to have a fair bit of NZ research to do.Another question is it also possible to get a hold of the NZSG Index version 4, without becoming a society member.

Membership will provide you with a wide range of resources from the NZSG's national collection of certificates, pedigree lists, probates, etc, etc. as well as the opportunity to publish your interests in the magazine and on-line.

As for the Index v.4 I believe that it's available to members only, but I suggest that you contact the NZSG through the website to confirm this.
