Commander JAMES ATWATER of the Royal Navy was born on 7th November, 1774 and baptised at St. Mary's Church, Whitechapel on 27th November 1774, to parents JOHN & MARY ATWATER of Newcastle Street, Whitechapel. I have no reason to believe that this was the permanent home of the Atwater family as I have been unable to locate anyone else by this name in the area.
The next sighting of Commander JAMES ATWATER is that of his marriage to MARY ANN CHICK at St. Mary's Church, Lewisham, Kent on 11th September, 1802 and they were to have the following nine children... MARY ANN ATWATER bapL August, 1803 in Greenwich married DANIEL STEPHENS, St. Mary's Lewisham April, 1825 ELEANOR AMELIA ATWATER bap: August, 1805 in Greenwich CHARLOTTE CHICK ATWATER bap: 1810, St.Alphege,Greenwich JAMES JOHN ATWATER bap: 1812, Minster, Isle of Sheppey married MARY ANN ROBINSON St.Luke, Old Charlton,Kent 1836 EMMA ATWATER bap:Sheerness,Isle of Sheppey Kent 1814 married WILLIAM THOMAS LEE SARAH ANN ATWATER bap:Minster, Isle of Sheppey, Kent 1816 married JOHN SHIPLEY Charlton, Kent 1838 Emigrated to Australia SAMUEL ATWATER born about 1817 ELEANOR ATWATER born about 1819 LOUISA EMELIA ATWATER born about 1823
Next generation
JAMES WILLIAM ATWATER b: abt. 1837 m.MARY LEWIS SARAH ATWATER b: abt. 1839 CHARLOTTE ATWATER b:1847 Kennington/Lambeth ELIZA ATWATER b: abt: 1859
If anyone has any knowledge of this family I would love to hear from them, and I would be more than willing to share any known knowledge with them. Thanking you in anticipation. Diana

Hi Diana,
What a surprise to see the ATWATER name in an enquiry. I don't know if we have spoke in the past but I am also researching the surname. I am not familiar with the line that you are researching as I have not been able to get the history of my GGG-grandmother Sophia ATWATER. She was born in Kent in about 1784. On the 1851 census, Sophia said she was born in Borden, Kent but despite searches, I have not located her birth. It may be possible that she was the sister of your James ATWATER.
One thing that I do have to note, all the names in your tree are repeated within my tree. For the most part, my family lived in the north west area of Kent. My surname changed to ATTWATER in the early 1800's with my GG-grandfather, Marshall ATTWATER. He was noted with the birth entry of ATWATER but different sources over the years have him changing it to the current spelling.
As for variations of spelling, I have found many. Anywhere from Allwater to Walters. You will not find many ATWATER / ATTWATER's when you search for them. The surname is very uncommon and most familys just went with WATERS.
I look forward to hearing your comments.
Sincerely, Nancy Attwater

Hi Nancy,
Great to hear from you. I think that we have corresponded briefly before, but it would have been many years ago, and we could not establish any link between your family and mine then, as it would seem to be even now.
Sadly I know of no Sophia in my tree, nor does the name occur at any other time to my knowledge. Interesting though that many of my known names occur in your tree! Certainly the names of Charlotte and Louisa came all the way down from my Chick family to the Atwaters, through my family right the way through until my mother's generation. My mother was Louisa Kathleen, and her eldest sister was Cecelia Charlotte.
Unlike you, I have not yet found any variation in spelling in my family (every one, without exception has only had one t), even though I have searched for every possible variation that I could think of. Admittedly, I have not looked for Allwaters or Waters, but shall do so now!
Other than the original James Atwater who was born to John and Mary Atwater in Whitechapel (I poured over the parish records but never ever found another Atwater, nor the marriage of John and Mary, so have no idea what they were doing there), every one of my family seemed to have spent their lives in and around Greenwich/Woolwich, with a couple of children of Commander James being born at Minster, Isle of Sheppey, when he must have been stationed there.
If you would like to have a look at my on-line family tree, here is the website address.

You should get a few more details from that, and who knows, you may even pick up a clue or two from that.
Many thanks for getting back to me. Diana

Hi Iris,
Many thanks for your letter. I will keep the information you have given me to hand, although at this point in time I have never found any of 'my' Atwaters anywhere much other than the Greenwich area, so do not think they are related.
I really do appreciate your imput and wish you lots of luck with your own research.
Happy hunting, Diana
