There are no formal birth certificates before 1837. The only thing you can look for is the baptism which will be entered in the parish register. That means searching every church near to where you think they might have been born. You can get the films of nearly all parishes from the LDS. Look to see where your nearest centre is on www.familysearch.org. They have worldwide coverage and you order the film and search it at their centre. I would think your first move is to get the 1851 census record as you said and discover where Thomas was born. You have the reference numbers from the index - again you can order the film from the LDS or put a specific post on rootschat asking for that particular film. Someone may be able to look for it in London. The FRC have all census films and it does not take long to search when you have the reference. Failing that then write to Carlisle record office and ask for a search - though they will charge. Hope someone can find it for you. Andrea

hello-found this site by chance-maybe we have the same gt gt grandfather- my grandad is still alive(just turned 90) Joseph(Joe) Farren and is still living in Ravenglass(did live at holmrook -earlier ravenglass with wife and four children) . His son Peter still lives at holmrook-David(my Dad(66)) lives in ulverston-carol in manchester and irene in cornwall. Then their are grandchildren and great grandchildren in various places-I live in Italy. Joe's father was also called Joe(I think)and lived in Ravenglass -not sure if he was son of Joseph from Drigg son of Thomas ?? Anyway if u see this would be interested to see your research if u have more info...Sandra
