BIGG family. Sheppey <1840s
« on: Saturday 11 June 05 08:24 BST (UK) »

Hello all,
I've only just discovered my Kentish connections and am already stuck!  My 3xgreat-grandmother was Caroline BIGG, born Eastchurch, Kent around 1828.  From the 1841 census, I know that she and her family were living in Essex (West Ham) by 1841, where her father had a large market garden.  The family at that time consisted of:

William BIGG (father) born c.1795
Lydia BIGG (mother) born c. 1800
William BIGG (son) born c. 1820
Henry BIGG (son) born c. 1825
Sarah BIGG (daughter) born c. 1825 (twins?)
Frances BIGG (daughter) born c. 1826
Caroline BIGG (daughter) born c. 1828

Sarah BIGG is interesting as she was married in Australia (Melbourne area) in 1853, to William WEST.  They had two children, Lydia (1854) and William (1857) and then Sarah left Australia, and by 1861 was living with her two children in Stepney, along with Caroline BIGG and her daughter Caroline Berringer BIGG (illegitimate, as they said in those days).  Caroline Berringer is my 2xgreat grandmother.

If anyone recognises this family, I would like to hear from you.  I am keen to get further back than 1841, but have not been able to find anything on the IGI.  In 1861 Lydia BIGG stated she was born in Lydd, Kent.

Cheers  Smiley

Have just realised - the baptisms in Dymchurch were the girls' second baptisms!  They were baptised about a week earlier back in Eastchurch, where they were born  Smiley  Lydia, their mother, was a Dymchurch girl, so presumably her family was still living back there in the 1820s  Smiley

Thanks again bearkat  Cheesy

Yep, that's the ones  Smiley  (Hi Tess!  Cheesy  )

Lydia's parents were William Claringbould and Judith Wincles.

I've had a look at the 1841 census for Dymchurch and there are three or four WINCLES families living there.  No Claringboulds, though.

Have you seen the Tithe award schedules?

Hi bearkat  Smiley

I had not seen the Tithe award schedules before, so thank you for that link  Smiley

I normally do trawl the usual sites every now and then for my families, but haven't done anything on the Wincles/Bigg/Claringbold line for a long time...I really should though, if only because I love their names! (especially the Wincles!)
