birth/baptism James Newton
« on: Saturday 11 June 05 12:54 BST (UK) »

Could somebody find the birth/baptism record for James Edward Newton who was born c1837 in Litton, Tideswell Derbyshire? I have a copy of his marriage cert but unfortunately there is no father's name given so I am stuck! He was married in 1858 and was 'of full age' so his year of birth is a fairly wild guess. Thanks.

I'm sure you've looked at the IGI, but there's a James Newton baptised in Youlgreave in 1836, mother Elizabeth Newton, no father mentioned. They're not that far apart. Perhaps his marriage certificate doesn't mention his father because he didn't know who it was...

looking on the IGI batch for Tideswell, Derbyshire, there are 2-3 children born to a James and Sarah Newton in the right time frame, unfortunately your James is not there. I would suggest asking for an 1851 Census lookup for him, in either Litton/Tideswell area.

all the best

Thanks for all the help. How close is Youlgreave to Litton/Tideswell? I am from the other end of the country so do not know the area. I will follow up the census suggestion.
