Hi Gareth,
look up the thread on Naturalisation here on this board http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,130042.0.html and any other threads with Naturalisation or Aliens in the title
See also the Book-link in the "Immigrant Resources" board. http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,45248.0.html and http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,48920.0.html
You'll then know all we know at the moment
If he was naturalised, then his details must be at TNA, Kew.
Good luck Bob

How far is it to Bethlehem?

Gareth - a little bit about researching Swiss families:
First of all, Swiss nationals are considered to be citizens of a specific town/village in Switzerland where their family is first recorded. This place of origin is handed down from father to child, and in the past a woman lost her father's origin upon marriage and acquired her husband's. (It's a little more flexible now.) ALL vital records for a Swiss national are recorded at their place of origin, regardless of where birth/marriage/death occurred.
Concrete example: my husband was born in La Chaux-de-Fonds and married in England, but all the records are in Interlaken, which holds the books for the village of Lauterbrunnen where his family originates. In Swiss law, I am a citizen of Lauterbrunnen, as our our children, even though none of us was born there.
Sooo... Ask your local library to get hold of the Swiss Surname Book (published in English under the title "Swiss Surnames: a Complete Register" by Picton Press), and look up the name Orth. If you're lucky, there will only be one place of origin listed. You can then contact the register office there with all the details you have - father's name, approx date of birth based on census info, etc - and they should be able to help you. There may be a small charge - they may also ask for proof that you're related. When you know the place of origin, post it here, and I'll look up the address of the register office.
Hope this helps!

Hope you can get hold of it - afraid we're not currently living in Switzerland, so don't have access to a copy. I did look Orth up in our Dictionnaire Historique et Biographique de la Suisse, which lists lots of Swiss families, but there's no mention, unfortunately.
