I am a bit confused about what is meant by the ages were rounded down by five years. Were ALL ages taken back 5 years or if some were not which ones didn't change?
Hi Lynn. The Enumerators in the 1841 census were given instructions to round down adult ages Not all complied. Therfore any adult in 1841 census may have given age as up to 4 years older than suggested
The census schedule (or enumerator) asked the age of each person on their last birthday. The 1841 census was rounded down to the nearest 5 years for everyone 15 and over, although this instruction was not always followed. A person of 34 was listed as 30, someone 36 was listed as 35. From 1851 on, the age is as reported on the schedule or to the enumerator.
The 1841 census being the first of any benefit to us was extremely limited as to what it contained. No relationships were listed. No place of birth was listed only if the person was born in or outside the county. (Y or N) Numerous abbreviations were used. Here is a Link you may find interesting....Kris
