Militia ~1800 Aberdeenshire
« on: Sunday 12 June 05 09:30 BST (UK) »

Would anyone be able to point me in the right direction to finding more out about the Aberdeenshire Militia ~1800? I have Daniel Gordon m Mary Scott in Dundee 1801. He was a member of Aberdeenshire Militia. Why would he have been in Dundee? Are there muster rolls for the Aberdeenshire Militia ~1800?
Any suggestions appreciated.

Hi Herlingo,
If you go to
the national archives, site.
then the catalogue,
and search.
there is some info, on a
WO 121/73/60 DANIEL GORMAN alias DANIEL GORDON Born DURROW, Offaly Served in 5th Dragoon Guards; 44th Foot Regiment Discharged aged 43 after 15 years 6 months of service 1804

Even though this is not the aberdeen militia, I notice if you search aberdeenshire militia, they all seem to belong to other regiments.

see below.

Division within WO    Records of the Royal Chelsea and Kilmainham Hospitals       89
WO 97   Royal Hospital Chelsea: Soldiers Service Documents       72
WO 121   Royal Hospital, Chelsea: Discharge Documents of Pensioners       17
Division within WO    Armed forces service records       2
WO 76   War Office: Records of Officers' Services       2

I don't know if your guy, is in these lists. because it depends on whether, they went through, the hospital system, or if he changed regiments, and was on their muster rolls.
There are muster rolls available, but, you will just have to search further.
All this above can be purchased online, and, they charge a 10 pound fee, to tell you the quote, and then they take the off the further charge, it all works out quite cheap.
But of course, you have to find your fellow.

I also have an ancestor (Charles Milne) who was in the Aberdeen militia from 1803 - 1835- about the same time. The muster rolls at The National Archives show the soldiers travelling all over the place from Inverness to Dover, so Dundee is not unusual.

Try looking at the discharge papers at TNA as well - these were very helpful to me.

My chap was discharged to a Chelsea pension as a Chelsea outpensioner, even though he lived in Scotland.
