In the 1881 census my great-grandmother's family had a grandson living with them John William Lowsley aged 7. His birth certificate gives his parents as Benjamin LOWSLEY and Dinah DOUTHWAITE. They were married in 1870, Sculcoates, but after that there is no mention of Dinah, and I can't find any record of her death.
Does anyone have any information or suggestions? Any help will be appreciated. Lesley

Hi Lesley, check this out 1871 cencus Sculcoates RG10/4783 Folio 99 -------------------- Benjamin Losley abt 1851 Hull, Yorkshire, England Lodger Sculcoates Yorkshire Deana Losley abt 1850 Hull, Yorkshire, England Lodger Sculcoates Yorkshire -------------------------- On the original image it does look like those names but maybe the enumerator wrote it down like it sounded.

Thanks again. It hadn't occurred to me that Dinah might have remarried - I'd assumed she'd died and spent ages looking through the indexes for her death. I always thought divorce would have been out of the question for working class couples in the 1850s. So I'm very grateful to you and Tati. Lesley

Just an update -
I sent for the relevant marriage certs and as Joe and Tati suggested, Dinah Lowsley (nee Douthwaite) had remarried Andrew Peart, in Sept 1877. The marriage cert describes her as a 'widow'. She married in Sculcoates but moved to London.
Ben Lowsley remarried Eliza Blatherwick in December 1877; he is described as a 'bachelor'. He married in Nottingham.
In 1901 Ben's son to Dinah was living with him and his new family.
Now, as Ben definitely wasn't a bachelor at his second marriage, and Dinah most certainly wasn't a widow, I'm left wondering whether these were both bigamous relationships.
I'm not sure how easy it was to get a divorce in 1870s, but the Lowsleys were very poor - I'd love to hear if anyone has any info about this subject.
Thanks again to everyone who helped me solve one problem (and left me with a very interesting followup!)
Lesley
