Please can someone help me find my granny's birth details?
Granny and granddad are both dead now, but her life seems to be a bit of a mystery, to the point even her children (my uncles and aunts) don't know the answers.
The only details I have are the following:
1. Her name was Martha Wilson. 2. At a young age she was sent to an orphange near her home, (presumably somewhere in Essex). 3. Her father could be a mariner and possibly Scottish. Believed to be named James Wilson, although have reason to believe he could be William Wilson! 4. She married my grandfather, Henry Arthur Nobbs b1906, on Christmas Eve 1935 in Romford Register Office. Grandad was born and bred in Romford. 5. She didn't know her proper DOB, and only found out the correct date when she received her pension ... she was 7 years older than she thought!! DOB believed to be between 1890 and 1900. 6. She died in 1983.
Please can someone help me find her. Her wedding to my grandfather is the earliest part of her life I have managed to trace. Would be great to get her parents and siblings.
Thank you.

Hi Taffy
Her date and place of birth should be on her death certificate (and in the index) assuming that the person who registered the death knew the facts. It does seem rather difficult to believe that somebody was 7 years older than they thought though ............... a couple of years maybe but 7
Best wishes

Just seen you thought father was James not John or possibly William I suppose the W is likely to be for William. Otherwise all a good fit as he is a mariner and young Frances Martha does end up in an orphanage. Too much of a coincidence not to be the right family What do you think? Jan

I'm wondering if she did know her true age but kept it quiet so as the the age gap between her and you grandfather was not so big. Jan

Hi, thanks for the info.
I was thinking about Francis Martha Wilson, and as you say, all the information seems to match. However there is something that put me off it being her.
Firstly, she had four children (the third being my dad) between 1936 and 1940. As Francis Wilson was born in 1888 that would have made her between the ages of 48 and 52 when she had the children. Isn't that a little old? Plus it meant she would have been 18 years older that granddad ... but we did guess she was 14 years older.
Secondly, I can't confirm her father's name as she claimed she was in the orphanage from a young age (guessing around 3 years old). She just remembered that she used to see her mum and siblings walking past the playground and didn't even acknowledge her. Her marriage certificate to my grandfather in 1935 lists her father as James Wilson, merchant seaman, deceased.

Hi After I'd posted I did think that made her rather old - she does seem such a good match otherwise . There is a William Wilson Marine engineer born Scotland with a 1 year old daughter Martha living Camberwell in 1901 - is he someone you've already thought about? You say Martha found out her correct DOB when she got her pension - I'm wondering how they found out and whether it is information you might be able to get access to Regards Jan

Hi Jan
Thanks for the help. I haven't seen that William Wilson, will check into the one more.
I have been hunting for months for information, but am new to this and am still learning about all the different places to find things. Unfortunately, all my grandparents are now dead, as is my father and one of his siblings. I am trying to speak to my uncle but he doesn't seem to know much either. I am at a bit of a loss about where else to look. Her birth certificate would solve all my problems if I could find out who the heck she was! Vicious circle.
I was thinking though, wouldn't she have had to produce a birth certificate of some sort in order to marry, as proof of identification? Or as that more of a recent thing? Wonder where that is!
Regards Paul

Hi Paul, Don't think you had to provide any proof of who you were until relatively recently. Not sure it tells you on this site but it is extremely useful anyway: http://www.dixons.clara.co.uk/Certificates/indexbd.htm Hope you find Martha eventually. Trouble is you can never be sure how much of what you think you know is actually true - people lie for all sorts of reasons. Have found quite a few instances of this in my family. Makes things trickier but probably more interesting All the best Jan
