I am trying to trace my ancestors on the male side of the family. As I was born in Scotland I am interested in finding out when and if they migrated from the mother country.
My father Joseph Cameron 1911 died 1977 Grandfather Thomas Cameron born Newburn 1873 died 1939 Great Grandfather Joseph Cameron born Wigton 1853 died 1913 Great Great Grandfather Thomas Cameron born Wigton 1823 died ? Great Great Great Grandfather Joseph Camern born (town unknown) 1788 died 1861 married Jane Sims Wigton 26/09/1812.
You may have more luck by asking for a specific lookup rather than a generic one - try posting for an "1841/1851/1861 Census Lookup for Camerons in Wigton" on the Lookup requests board (this is the offers board so will ask for the post to be moved) asking to see if anyone can trace Joseph &/or Thomas senior with their families.
Have also had another look on the IGI for you and found what looks to be Joseph senior's parents marriage:
William Cameron married Elisabeth Stockdale - 5 Nov 1775 Wigton, Cumberland
so it looks as if your family come from good Cumbrian stock!
Not sure which way you are meaning when you refer to the "mother country" - as a Cumbrian I'd like to assume you mean you want to find out when your ancestors crossed the border but I'm guessing that you want to find if the family originated in Scotland?
If so you are probably going to have to dig in parish records to find out - I would try and confirm via the 1841/51/61 census that the Camerons on the IGI are in fact your Camerons. With luck you will find Joseph & Jane with Thomas on the 1851 or 1841, even just the 1861 should confirm if Joseph was born in Wigton or not and may make the link to the IGI record.
Then try e-mailing the Cumbrian Records Office - think Wigton registers will be at Carlisle http://www.cumbria.gov.uk/archives/recordoffices/carec.asp although it may be Whitehaven. If you quote the IGI references they should send you a copy of the parish register for the birth and/or wedding for a copying fee rather than the research fee. This may give you more detail - especially for marriages where there may have been a licence rather than a marriage by banns. It is a bit of a lottery as some times it tells you which parish they were from originally but sometimes not - depends on the clerk at the time.
