TB Sanatoriums in East Sussex c 1900
« on: Monday 13 June 05 20:47 BST (UK) »

Please can someone help me? My Great Grandmother Florence Louise Wright nee Laurence born 1879 in Salehurst died, I believe, of TB some time during the early 1900's, possibly 1912-1920. Her husband Sidney had apparently died in Africa, not sure how or where, and Florence left 2 children orphaned by her death. I would appreciate any assistance in finding records of her demise and possible burial place, either near Salehurst or possibly near Eastbourne, where the two girls were subsequently raised by her brother Herbert and his wife. He was a policeman, and later publican of the Victoria Hotel in Latimer Road, Eastbourne.

I have found details of aDarvell Hall Hospital in Robertsbridge but this did not become a Sanatorium until 1920 - 1948.

Many Thanks if you can help Smiley

I have been thinking about this one on and off and as you have not had a reply thought I would add my two penneth!   My immediate thoughts about hopsitals were Pouchlands near Chailey and Hellingly about which I know nothing but I think there was a hospital there.   Have you googled "isolation hospitals"?   Lewes Record Office should have information about them.   A2A site has a lot of their catalogue on it.   All deaths at that time will be on 1837online.com so you need to search for all Florence Wrights - it gives age so you can eliminate some of them.   Have you looked for a will for her or her husband?   Lots of avenues to explore.

I suggest you try the National Hospital Archives database - a collaboration between the National Archives and the Wellcome Institute for History of Medicine.

I was (partially) successful in finding the answer to a similar query. If you cannot find what you are looking for in the database, it might be worth writing to the Wellcome Institute directly.

Good luck

Many thanks to all peeps who have replied to my original request. Hellingly Hospital was used until quite recently as a hospital for psychological problems i think, but I shall definitely take all your suggestions on board and hope I get some positive answers.

I have already looked at other Hospitals in the Eastbourne area but how does one obtain records of patients from these , bearing in mind I am looking at possibly 1920 or so. Would they keep them for this length of time?? I'll keep you posted Wink
