The Bann Family - Poynton and Worth
« on: Monday 13 June 05 22:19 BST (UK) »

I am researching my paternal grandfathers side of the family and have quite a bit of information already, but also alot of gaps.  The family name is Bann and the information I have suggests they were mainly resident in Cheshire .
In the 1901 census I have found my grandfathers family living at The Village, Poynton with Worth (although my grandfather wasn't born until after the census, but siblings names match).  This gives his father as Joseph (aged 30) and his mother as Sarah Ann(aged 28).
The 1891 census suggest that Joseph was still living at home with his mother (Ann, a widow aged 45).  In 1881 the same family is listed wth A Henry Bann as head of the household and Ann his spouse.  However at the 1871 census the only trace I can find of the family is an Ann Bann and her son Joseph living with her mother (Nancy Smith).  There is no trace of Henry- there are numerous Henry Banns around  at this time, but none fit.  I have also traced a marriage between a Henry Bann and an Ann Smith at Manchester Cathedral that did appear to fit with the information I have - I haven't yet ordered the certificate and can't recall the date at present.
If anybody has any information on this side of the Bann family, or can suggest any historic/cultural reason why I cannot find Henry in the 1871 census I would be grateful.
Similarly if anybody is looking for information on the Bann family in Cheshire I have amassed quite a bit of census information etc that I would be happy to check through/pass on.
Thank you in anticipation

Hi Carra

The Henry Bann that seems to fit in 1871 is the following

RG10/3668 folio 127 pg.10

Eliza Bann Head unm 59 shopkeeper Poynton
Henry Bann Brother 42 Mar Assistant shopkeeper Worth
Charlotte Worsencroft neice un 27 millener Poynton
Elizabeth Bann 10 scholar Manchester

I realise that Henry was a colliery weighman in 1881, but as there was a ten year gap between both census, he could have changed his job.  The age is abt right, and it does say he is Married on the census, though his wife is not living there.

Hope this is helpful

Hi Su,
Thanks for looking.  I had found this entry before but had discounted it because by the next census the Henry you have identified was only 8 years older.  Is it still possible it is the same person?
