My first time using such a site
« on: Tuesday 14 June 05 08:47 BST (UK) »

My Name is Poppit and my husband and I are looking for his ancestors I am wondering if anyone can help us as we have really struck a brick wall.

my husbands last name is Reynolds and his father was made a ward of the state in Victoria Australia and we have found his parents as we now need to go to Argyllshire for his great grandfather we only have that he was born there from his death certificate he died on a property here his children did not give his death details it was the property owner. his name was Duncan Niven or Neville and his parents names are Donald or Daniel Reynolds - Janet Mcinnes or Innes
Duncan was married to Maria Dalton in 1890 she passed away and left 1 living child Duncan re married we think as we cannot find a certificate for the marriage his second wifes name was Margaret Evelyn McLeod all these people we did not know

Hi poppit,

Welcome to RootsChat.

You have already made a good start by beginning with what you know and working backwards.

Where did Duncan marry Maria Dalton?  Where was Duncan living in 1901?

If he was still here in UK, then it should be possible to trace him on the 1901 Census.

For England and Wales, go to this site:

http://www.1901census.nationalarchives.gov.uk/
Once you have found the person you are looking for (hopefully) in the index, you can download the image for a small fee.

For Scotland, go to this site:

http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

This second site is also the official government repository for Scottish Civil registration records, census records, parish registers.  With the Scottish registers, you can view the official entry (and save the image to your computer) which contains all the information : parents names, spouse names etc. for a small fee.

Without any further dates to go on, it is difficult to point you in the right direction.  I have had a quick look at the 1881 census for Argyll just in case anything stands out.  Reynolds is unusual for a Scottish name.  The index threw up more people with the surname Ronald(s).

Have a look around our beginners board for any further useful tips.  You may also find information of the Scotland - General board.

Please ask any questions you want - someone will be only too pleased to try to help you.

Thanks Nell

Duncan married Maria Dalton in North Melbourne, Victoria, Australia on 21 February 1890.

Duncan was living in Bendigo, Victoria, Australia in 1901.

We don't know when he arrived in Australia nor do we know whether he came out from Scotland as an assited migrant or simply made his own way to Australia.

He is reputed to have married Margaret Eveline Mcleod in 1901 but there is no marriage record in the Victorian Registry Office. On childrens birth certificates it states marriage date of 16 March 1901.

Hiya Poppit,

Do you have an approximate year of birth for Duncan, maybe from his death cert?

All the best,
Pam

Hi Pam,

Duncan was born circa 1866. He died on 3 May1932 at Boort Victoria Australia.

His death certificate states that he was born in Argyllshire Scotland and as far as we know his parents names were Daniel (or Donald) and Janet McInnes (or Innes).

Regards,

Poppit
