Thanks Tara - you are obviously another early bird.

This confirms that Ann is consistent in giving her birth place as Wormingford Suffolk, although the Suffolk Rootschat coordinator is adamant that Wormingford is not in Suffolk!  We can't find their marriage so are stuck as to her maiden name.  Any ideas?

I've had another look - is there any way to tell if Arthur George and Harvey Samuel are the children of John and Ann?

her maiden name should be on the birth certificate of one of the children

in the 1871 census John and Ann have a son called Arthur born 1862 - perhaps  Arthur George and Harvey Samuel are not their children, but 2 children with the same name is not that uncommon. in 1871 Arthur George and Harvey Samuel are both boarders at school, so not with John and Ann

We have now received the birth certificate, as you suggested, and after much squinting and moving the paper about, we have deciphered the name and think it is CANT.  And we have found her on the 1851 Witham index - so I've posted a new request.
