Hi, Can someone please tell me where Glendale is/was? I have an ancestor whose possible death was registered in Glendale. The volume number was 10b, which i recognise as the Northumberland area, but where exactly was Glendale? I'm hoping its near Alnwick/Amble!
Cheers Jacdee

Glendale is apparently near Haltwhistle in Northumberland according to the gazetteer search on www.genuki.org.uk

jacdee,
Go to the genuki site mentioned by Sue...
( sorry, I am hopeless at web page references)
go to... England... then Northumberland... then Civil Registrations.. then near bottom click on "Registrations from 1837..."
See the 12 District Registration areas that made up Northumberland then, choose "Glendale" to see all the places/towns/villages within the Glendale reg district.
In the general sense, Glendale is not town or village but name of an area. The physical registration of BMD would have been done at one of the two main "centres" within Glendale, either Ford or Wooler.
Alnwick was also a Registration District and had three sub-district offices for registrations... Alnwick itself, Embleton and Warkworth... Amble folk would have registered their BMDs at Warkworth sub-district office, and these would show up on BMD indexes under Alnwick.
So as Glendale was a territory rather a particular "spot". it is difficult to "distance" it from other places.
See also on Genuki the "live" map of Northumberland Parishes, which gives good info on places, and miles apart.
Also for great info and old photos on Northumberland towns/villages, including Alnwick, Amble, Ford and Amble, go to >communities.northumberland.gov.uk<
Look into the trade directories and you might get lucky and see your ancestor.
Wooler to Alnwick... about 20 miles

Dear Jaycee, like you I have been trying to find out where Glendale was, as I have a few ancestors who had BMD registered there on the St Caths. I sent for one of the birht certificates and when it came back the Reigstration distrist is Glendale, the Sub district was Wooler the actual place where the birth took place too place was Hetton/Chatton. Hi - type `Glendale registration district` into advanced search. It brings up a list of the places in the Glendale Reg. District. Cheers, Frek.

Hi Twiggy Try Berwick upon Tweed for any certificates for Chatton and any of the Hettons
The Hettons are farm steads
Off the Belford to Wooler road
Belford is on the main A1
between Berwick and Alnwick in Northumberland
also Glendale covers around the Wooler District
Elizabeth from Belford some years ago
