I'm trying to trace my Grandfather's ( Edward Moyes) family.
He was born in Rattlesden Suffolk in the late 1800's.

Hiya Tutton,

A very warm melcome to Rootschat to you  Grin

The best place to start for a quick answer would be the 1901 census.  You say he was born in the late 1800's can you get any closer to a year?

I ask because it would be easier to find a mis-transcribed chap if we knew something definite.

The only Edward MOYES I can see in Suffolk was born in 1850 and he is the head of the household.

He was born in Thurston so this is looking good.  Could he be your Edward's father? Or uncle or maybe.  To be sure this is a connected family we can move back in time but our confirmation would come from knowing your Edward's age.

1901: Thurston St Peter

Gt Green

Edward Moyes Head Wid 51 Horsekeeper on farm bn Thurston
Annie Kate Moyes daur 26 (? age half obscured)  bn Thurston
James Moyes Father 85 Parish Relief bn Thurston
Rattey (or Kelty) Moyes  Mother 82 bn Thurston

What other info do you have to help work your Edward back into earlier census?

All the best,
Pam

Thanks Boongie Pam.

Since I put my query in I have found the he was born 1890. And that His fathers name was James, he died when Edward was 6. so I am getting there slowly.

Hiya Tutton,

So this could be him in 1891...

RG12/1454
Stow
Walsham le Willows
ED: 7  F: 71 P: 15

Norton

Crawley Cottage

James Moyes Head Mar 25 Agricultural Labourer bn Thurston
Elizabeth Moyes Wife Mar 20 bn Partenham?
Edward J Moyes Son 1 bn Tostock

Having a handle on James now we can step back to 1881 which you will find here for free..
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp

From that you can step back again.  I can look up 1871 and 1861 if you would like.  I haven't because I don't want to spoil your fun too much  Grin

Please let me know if you want them - just reply here and if I'm not quick enough someone else will be.  Otherwise post a look up request on the county board look up requests.

If you haven't found Freebmd yet it's here..
http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/

There is an interesting marriage for a James Moyes and possibly marrying an Elizabeth Balls in 1889 Thingoe Suffolk.  The reference is 1889 Dec Qtr 4a 1230.

Hope this helps,
Pam

Hi I am also tracing my Moyes family who originate in the
Wetherdon and Haughley parishes 1800 to 1900.(next to Rattlesdon) The main Lines are James, born Yaxley 1810/1811 ,Frederick born wetherdon 1857. I would be interested in what you find.
