My greatgrandad was Thomas Harland he was a ship builder from Whitby and in the 1850's he moved his family to Middlesbrough and lived on Myrtle Road until his death there in 1908. I descend fron his daughter Laura who married William Stokoe in 1897. Anyone else related?

Hi Sue, Do you know if your Ann Harland is related to a William Harland who married Mary Petty in 1792 (born 1770)? also, Mary's sister Ann married a John Harland in 1800. Both marriages at Lythe, North Yorkshire
Best wishes, sue in Oz

Hi Ladies, Found this in the 1858 probates which may refer to your John Harland of Lythe.
Letters of administration of the personal estate and effects of John Harland late of Lythe in the county of York laborer a widow deceased who died 15 November 1857 at Lythe aforesaid were granted at York to Ann Corney (wife of William Corney of Lythe aforesaid joiner) the only child of the said deceased she having been first sworn. Probate granted 15 December 1858 effects under 20GBP
I also have a few more Harlands in the probate data base namely one Mary Harland from Whitby however not living in the UK I'm not sure of areas near and around Lythe and Whitby. Some of the probates are from Kirby Wiske and Willerby. Let me know if you would like these as well.
Cheers Bronwyn

And cheers to you too Bronwyn! That is great, I am actually more interested in the Mary Harland because she could be one of my Petty line (Married William Harland in 1792. Does the date fit? Thanks very much for going to the trouble of looking. I'll be communicating with the other Sue who is researching the Harlands and comparing notes. Hopefully this will be her John! I'm not sure about Kirby Wiske but Willerby is in East Yorkshire just outside of Hull (Unless there are two Willerby's) Many thanks once again, Sue

I also have a Mary Harland in my family. She was born in Whitby about 1786. She married William Hodgson (b 1786, Fylingdales) in 1816 in Fylingdales and had Alice Hodgson 2 years later

Hi Anna and Catherine, I have looked for Mary and William Hodgson, Fylingdales and Ann and Thomas Hart in the probate index. There are 7 William Hodgson's and 3 Mary Hodgson's but unfortunately none from Fylingdales. I also have 2 Thomas Harts, 1 from Ellerburn and 1 from Thornton but both executors not testators. If you think any of these may be relevent let me know and I will post the probates.
Cheers Bron

Hi Anna, I'm not sure of a connection but the name of Hodgson comes up a few times on my family documents. If this thread keeps going we may find out though! I believe Robin Hoods Bay comes under Fylingdales but I'm certainly not an expert on Yorkshire Geography! This is where some of my ancestors lived though and I would be interested to know what the population of the area was around 1750 or so.

Thanks Clive, Glad I didn't claim to be an expert! I knew it was in the general area but have been out of the country so long now it's all a distant memory
