Hi-ya

If anyone know's where it was in Sligo, or can lead me into the right direction.  It would be most helpful.
Thankyou

Hi Lyndsey

Sorry we haven't been able to help you so far on this one.

Have you had a look at all the usual general resources I tend to suggest?  Wink

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,83852.0.html

You could also look at these Sligo specific sites which may help.

Perhaps you would like to have a look at these resources to see if there is anything that might help you.

Please come back with any further queries or to let us know how you get on.

Best wishes

hi
here is some information you might be interested in Smiley

town asylum:ST. COLUMBAS/COLUMBUS  used to be a very scary looking place now it is a hotel owned be a well known hotel chain (still looks a bit scary!!). more recently built hospital (20-30yrs) same name near by.

i am not too sure about this one:   NAZERATH NOME it always held a bit of mystery for kids as for what is was used for. STILL IN USE

outside the town: CLOONAMAHON ( A MIXTURE OF THE ABOVE TWO ). STILL IN USE.

I COULD FIND OUT A BIT MORE IF YOU NEED IT. LET ME KNOW.

I think you're right about Saint Columba's Old Psychiatric Hospital in Sligo, shirlee. Prior to it opening in 1855 the Connaught District Asylum was used. It had accommodation for 150 patients. It catered for all the counties of Connaught ... Galway, Leitrim, Mayo, Roscommon and Sligo. It was built at a cost of £27,000. Before 1833, any patients who needed to be put into an asylum were taken with military escort to Dublin by side-car (that would be like a jaunting car). It was near Ballinasloe so it would make sense for the Asylum in Sligo to be known as "The Local Sligo Asylum."
